In a post-Endgame era, Marvel Studios hoped to deepen its lore with Chloe Zhao’s Eternals. With immortal gods and superpowered beings roaming the planet to protect humans, the story spanning centuries introduced many new heroes but failed to grab the audience's attention. A sequel has always been a point of contention, especially in times when the universe has taken a multiversal turn, but after a very long time, Zaho has broken her silence about making a sequel.

Under the guise of the superhero world, Zaho told a Greek mythology-esque story that reconciled various world events being influenced by the superpowered beings in the movie. When recently asked by ScreenRant whether she’d like to make a sequel, Zaho affirmed, “I would love that!” She further explained the idea behind the feature, “It’s about a pantheon of gods discussing the nature of humanity, and ultimately their judgment. Which is what Arishem said, 'I’ll be back for judgment.' And the reason why those brief plays existed is for humanity to see how the gods are seeing us, so we could evaluate how we were as a part of this cycle of the universe. Are we doing a good job? Are we kind to each other? Are we getting to know ourselves well enough?” The Hamnet director added,

"It’s there for a reason, this kind of myth, and these [MCU] films are a modern version of that to me. So, I would love to bring them back and have more discussion about the world we live in. I’m really proud of it."

'Eternals' Recieved Mixed Reactions

Eternals was Zaho’s first movie after her Oscar win. While fans were still reeling from the Infinity Saga, the movie did not make an impact on them despite having a great cast and a deep story. Zaho's MCU movie starred Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lia McHugh as Sprite, and Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos. Also rounding off the cast are Lauren Ridloff, Barry Keoghan, Don Lee, Kit Harington, Salma Hayek, and Angelina Jolie. On a budget of $236 million, the movie only made $402.1 million worldwide, making it a financial failure for the studio. Interestingly, it has a 47% Rotten Tomatoes critic score that is in clear contrast with the audience’s more favorable 77% rating.

Eternals is streaming on Disney+. Stay tuned to Collider for more such updates.
