There's an even bigger Marvel icon than Robert Downey Jr. Marvel superheroes aren’t only defined by their costumes, powers, and stories, but also by the actors who bring them to life. Over time, many characters have become inseparable from the Hollywood starts who have portrayed them on the big and the small screen.
Some Marvel characters are now permanently intertwined with their actors’ identities. Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, and Tom Hiddleston are impossible to separate from Wolverine, Professor X, and Loki, for example. Robert Downey Jr. takes this to another level, as he isn't only synonymous with Iron Man, but with the entire MCU, serving as its defining face since the franchise's beginnings in 2008.

Patton Oswalt's Garth Blundin pitches a crossover movie as a filibuster in Parks & Rec
While Robert Downey Jr. is the MCU's biggest star, Patton Oswalt has contributed to the universe in more ways than most mainstream actors. Oswalt has written directly for Marvel Comics, co-writing MODOK: Head Games in 2020 and curating the 2024 hardcover anthology Marvel: Unforgettable Stories, which celebrates some of Marvel's best comics. In animation, Oswalt has voiced Uncle Ben and Chameleon in Marvel's 2017 Spider-Man show, and starred as the titular villain in Hulu's MODOK.
Even outside of Marvel productions, Oswalt has become something of a cultural ambassador for the brand. Oswalt's legendary Parks and Recreation filibuster pitch for a Star Wars-Marvel crossover demonstrated encyclopedic knowledge about both franchises. Throughout the years, Oswalt has shared his thoughts on Marvel in interviews and podcasts. Not to mention, he has also played Hedges in Blade: Trinity, all five Koenig quintuplets in Agents of SHIELD and Pip the Troll in Eternals' post-credits scene.
Patton Oswalt Deserves A Significant MCU Role
Patton Oswalt Can Still Play A Live-Action MCU Character
Patton Oswalt's Pip the Troll introduces Eros in Eternals' post-credits scene
Considering his passion for Marvel, Patton Oswalt deserves a far more significant MCU role than Pip the Troll, whose debut in Eternals was widely criticized for its weak CGI. While Pip has had major moments in comics such as The Infinity Gauntlet, the MCU has largely sidelined Eternals, and with Starfox absent, there’s little indication Pip will return. Patton Oswalt’s talents are currently underutilized in a role that barely showcases his knowledge and skills.
Pip the Troll probably won't return anytime soon, and the Koenig siblings from Agents of SHIELD are highly unlikely to cross over into the MCU proper. Since actors as iconic as Robert Downey Jr. have returned after their seemingly permanent exits, there's a big opportunity for a fan like Patton Oswalt to get a better role in the near future. Oswalt could add another voice role to his filmography, but he also has the chance to play a live-action MCU character.
With MODOK gone in the MCU and so many Marvel villains still unused, Oswalt could make a standout live-action antagonist. His comedic timing would suit eccentric but dangerous enemies such as the Fantastic Four adversaries Wizard, Psycho-Man, and the Impossible Man. If there's anyone who could play a deep-cut antagonist with the same passion as an A-list villain, it's Patton Oswalt.
