The IT: Welcome to Derry episode 7 trailer reveals the origins of the series' key villains. The HBO horror series takes on a new content set in the world of Stephen King's beloved IT universe. Transporting audiences back to 1962, the series chronicles the events that take place in Derry prior to the popular novel and movie adaptations.
In this time period, Pennywise is still haunting the nightmares of young children. This time, that is through a cast that includes young actors like Matilda Lawler, Clara Stack, Amanda Christine, and Blake Cameron James. Bill Skarsgård reprises his role of Pennywise, the killer clown for which the IP is known.
HBO Max has now revealed the trailer for IT: Welcome to Derry episode 7. Though the clip is short, the trailer makes it clear that the upcoming episode will delve even further into Pennywise's backstory than the previous episodes have.
Specifically, Pennywise is introduced to a carnival audience as "the dancing clown." Cross-cutting shows a variety of shots, including a distressed-looking Dick Halloran, and angry mob, and a young and older version of the clown.
The masked mob arrives at the Black Spot in It Welcome to Derry
IT: Welcome to Derry has had a love-hate relationship with Pennywise so far. The clown's reveal in the series has taken a long time. They did not show the clown at all until he was seen in the shadows and in a picture at the end of episode 3.
Episode 4 showed a bit more of Pennywise in its conclusion, though the episode as a whole delved further into Derry's history and focused less on the classic clown. It was not until Welcome to Derry episode 5 that audiences properly glimpsed Skarsgård in his return to the role.
The trailer reveals that the series is making for lost time. They will course-correct for all the time that they spent shying away from Pennywise, and dedicate screen time to fully fleshing out his backstory and involvement within Derry.
The trailer also heavily emphasizes Dick Hallorann, a figure of increasing importance in Welcome to Derry. Dick Hallorann originated as a character in King's novel The Shining. Like Danny Torrance, Dick could "shine," possessing mystical powers that allowed him to see events before they happened.
Hallorann's expanded role in IT: Welcome to Derry makes the show deeply connected with the King universe in a way that the IT movies themselves are not. By weaving Dick into an episode focused on Pennywise's backstory, the show can really craft some creative lore as the season comes to a close.
