True crime thrillers now dominate the conversation as one of the most popular genres in the world, and the next one on the slate just got an exciting new look. Row K Entertainment has released the first official trailer for Dead Man’s Wire, the true crime docudrama following Tony Kiritsis, a man who entered the office of Meridian Mortgage Company President Richard Hall and took him hostage with a sawed-off shotgun. Bill Skarsgård stars in the titular role as Tony Kiritsis, and Stranger Things icon Dacre Montgomery returns to the screen to feature opposite him as Richard ‘Dick’ Hall. The film will be released in theaters on January 17, 2026.

Dead Man’s Wire also features several other notable stars in big roles, such as Colman Domingo as Fred Temple, Al Pacino as M.L. Hall, Cary Elwes as Michael Grable, and Myha’la as Linda Page. Austin Kolodney wrote the script for Dead Man’s Wire, and Gus Van Sant directed the film. Van Sant previously worked with Matt Damon on Promised Land, the 2012 financial drama that Damon also wrote along with The Office veteran John Krasinski. Van Sant is also famous for his work on The Sea of Trees, the 2015 psychological thriller starring Matthew McConaughey and Naomi Watts. It’s currently streaming for free on Tubi and Pluto TV.

Collider spoke with Dead Man’s Wire writer Austin Kolodney as part of our Winter Preview Event, which also included an exclusive look at both Skarsgard and Montgomery in the film. Kolodney first heard the story of Tony Kiritsis on a podcast and immediately questioned why it hadn’t been turned into a movie. He later confirmed that Van Sant was his only choice to direct the movie, citing his ability to work smoothly in any genre.

Bill Skarsgård Is Back to One of His Signature Roles

Bill Skarsgård has played several famous roles over the years, but perhaps none more notable than Pennywise the Clown in Stephen King’s IT movies. Skarsgård has even returned to the role in the prequel series, IT: Welcome to Derry, which is now streaming on HBO Max. The show has aired five episodes with three more on the way. Skarsgård has appeared in several forms for Pennywise before he assumes his signature form near the end of the season.
