Nearly one year has passed since Timothée Chalamet earned his second Best Actor nomination for his portrayal of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown. Now, the verdict is out on what has long been projected as his next big Oscar contender, and A24's most expensive film ever, Marty Supreme. Reviews are starting to roll in on the high-profile sports dramedy, and critics appear to be mostly in agreement — it's another smash hit for the superstar. As of writing, the film holds a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, putting it three points ahead of his other big 2024 film, Dune: Part Two, and tying it as his second-highest-scoring live-action film ever, behind only 2017's Lady Bird and matching the heights of Little Women and Call Me By Your Name.
Marty Supreme was directed by Josh Safdie in his first feature without his brother, Benny Safdie, by his side. The other half of the filmmaking duo behind hits like Uncut Gems and Good Time also released a feature this year in the form of The Smashing Machine, starring Dwayne Johnson. At least in the eyes of critics, Josh has come out on top, handily beating out the respectable 70% the Mark Kerr biopic earned upon its release earlier this year. If anything, the score only reinforces the likelihood that Chalamet will earn his third, and perhaps best, shot yet at a statuette as a lead actor, while the film picks up a Best Picture nod. It'll still face stiff competition in what has been a stacked year with titles like One Battle After Another, Hamnet, and Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein, though.
Critics largely praised the film for its breakneck storytelling full of twists and turns, combined with a powerhouse performance by Chalamet and strong supporting turns. Collider's Ross Bonaime echoed those sentiments in his 8/10 review, praising the "bonkers" ensemble that includes the big-screen return of Gwyneth Paltrow, alongside Odessa A’Zion, Kevin O’Leary, Tyler, the Creator, Abel Ferrara, Fran Drescher, and more. He said, "Even though Josh Safdie might be playing to his strengths with Marty Supreme — with the intensity, the escalation, and the lead character who lives in a deeply gray area — this is still one of the most exciting and engaging films you'll see all year."
What Is 'Marty Supreme' About?
Co-written by Josh Safdie and Uncut Gems co-writer Ronald Bronstein, Marty Supreme is a classic tale about the overwhelming pursuit and cost of greatness centered on table tennis hustler Marty Mauser (Chalamet). It's loosely inspired by the life of ping-pong maverick Marty Reisman and the state of the sport in 1950s New York, following Mauser's singular pursuit of a dream that nobody else respects. He's defined by a lust for life and a determination to prove everyone wrong by rising from hustler to international superstar, no matter what it takes to get there. As he reaches higher echelons, so too do the stakes rise and the twists in his journey to the top become more plentiful, jeopardizing his existence and the few relationships he has on the way up.
