A man has gone viral for showing the incredible difference in his dog after getting groomed—along with a tongue-in-cheek comment.

Gerraint Oakley, who posts to Threads under the username @gerrainto, racked up close to 40,000 likes when he posted a photo of his small, long-haired dog before and after getting a haircut.

In a post shared on November 30, he wrote: "My dog just got a haircut and now it looks like he gave up drinking and got his life together."

He then showed a side-by-side of his pup: the first with the dog's hair appearing long, wiry and in his eyes, longer around the mouth which gave the impression of him having a bushy beard and mustache.

In the second, his fur looks smooth and silky, and has brought out the golden color in his fur. His big brown eyes are fully visible, and he's even wearing a red bowtie to tie the effect together.

Threads users were in stitches, one pointing out how it "doesn't look like the same dog," and another suggesting: "Your dog looked very grumpy before, now it looks bemused, how sweet."

One said the dog is "dashing both ways," as another leaned into the joke: "So glad he gave up drinking and got his life together!"

"That is sooo funny," another laughed. "Handsome boy!" One agreed: "He's a changed man, on the path to righteousness!"

And another commented: "Very handsome! Now we can see his big eyes!"

How often you should groom your dog depends on various factors, from their breed to their coat type and how often they go outside.

It's recommended that most dogs should be brushed by their owners daily, or several times a week, whereas professional grooming can be booked weeks or months apart, according to a report from Rover.

Silky long-haired dogs like Yorkshire terriers and Lhasa Apsos should be brushed daily, get haircuts every four to six weeks, and get a full groom every four to eight weeks. Wire-coated dogs like terriers and wolfhounds should be brushed two to three times a week, and go to the groomers every four to eight weeks.
