Try something different:
Show me the facts
Explain it like I’m 5
Give me a lighthearted recap
I confess I'm a little taken aback. The Witcher 4 isn't even out yet, and CD Projekt RED is already taking about the next few games in the series. What on Earth is going on?
The Witcher 4 was officially unveiled nearly a year ago now, with a stunning trailer at The Game Awards that showed Ciri has followed in her adopted father's footsteps and is now a Witcher in her own right. More recently, we learned it's full steam ahead on the new installment, with 447 developers currently working on The Witcher 4.
The Witcher 5 And 6 Are Already Being Teased
Seems more than a little ambitious
Ciri snarling at an enemy with a sword in hand in The Witcher 4
When The Witcher 4 was first confirmed a few years ago, CD Projekt RED made it clear that it would be the start of a new trilogy. What I wasn't prepared for was just how soon that trilogy would release.
In a recent financial update, CD Projekt RED’s co-CEO Michał Nowakowski stressed that The Witcher 4 will not release this year, but promised there'll be much less of a wait between The Witcher 4 and The Witcher 5 than we're perhaps used to. Apparently, all three games in the new trilogy will be released in a six-year period, which sounds almost laughably ambitious. Not that I'd complain about getting that much Witcher in the space of a decade, mind you.
According to Nowakowski:
“We’ve been using Unreal Engine 5 for The Witcher 4 for almost four years now, and we’re very happy with what we’ve achieved. We’re happy with how the engine is evolving and how we are learning how to make it work within a huge open-world game. Our plan still is to launch the whole trilogy within a six-year period, so yes, that would mean we would plan to have a shorter development time between The Witcher 4 and 5, between 5 and 6, and so on.”
I mean, I'd be more than okay with that.
The Witcher 5 Is Closer Than We Thought
I'm all for it, let's do it
I have no idea how feasible it is to release an entire RPG trilogy in the span of six years in this day and age. For comparison, the original Witcher trilogy released between 2007 and 2015, though it's worth noting that at that point CD Projekt RED had never made anything as ambitious as The Witcher 3.
For now, we'll just have to hope The Witcher 4 is going smoothly, and that it marks the start of a bold new chapter for this epic fantasy series.
