Announced back at San Diego Comic Con in 2019, the movie about the titular vampire hunter has struggled to come to fruition, with the film now entirely absent from Marvel's calendar of upcoming releases.
Goth, who joined the Blade cast in April 2023, now comments on the status of the MCU film in an interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. The actor makes clear that she doesn't have any insight into the current iteration of the movie, but says that it's one Marvel has placed a lot of importance on:
"I don't know what's going on with that. I think that they want to make it, and it's such an important film for them that they're taking their time with it. I really don't have any information. I don't know why it's taken the time that it has. We will see. Yeah, we will see."
When asked about the planned 1920s setting for the new Blade, Goth goes into a little more detail about her involvement, revealing chemistry reads and costume fittings all took place. Then, however, things fell apart. As Goth explains:
"The furthest that it got with me is that I went – I auditioned for that too actually – and I flew to Atlanta and we did a chemistry test between Marhershala and I. We did a costume fitting and a wig fitting, and I was very excited in the direction that it was going. It was very cool. And Marhershala had such an interesting take on it. He was great. And then it just unraveled from there, unfortunately."
Various screenwriters and directors have been attached to the MCU Blade movie at various points during its development. Stacy Osei-Kuffour, Michael Starrbury, Nic Pizzolatto, Eric Pearson, and Michael Green have all worked on the script, and directors Bassam Tariq and Yann Demange were also attached at different times before both departing.
Currently, no director is publicly attached to Blade, and whether the project gets made at all remains a question mark. In combination with the delays, Goth's latest comment is a reassuring sign, though, that Marvel won't make the movie just to make it, and they seemingly know how important it is to get the film right.
Like the original trilogy starring Wesley Snipes, the new Blade is said to be targeting an R-rating. Though most MCU movies are rated PG-13, the massive success of Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) – which brought Snipes back as the eponymous vampire hunter – suggests there is room for adult-oriented superhero fare.
Deadpool & Wolverine grossed $1.338 billion worldwide at the box office.
In terms of a potential release, any new Blade now won't arrive until 2028 at the earliest, and that assumes the script gets ironed out and filming dates get scheduled in the near future. At this point, the vampire movie would arrive after both the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, scheduled for December 18, 2026, and December 17, 2027, respectively.
With Secret Wars poised to mark a major reset point for the MCU as the end of the Multiverse Saga, it's not even clear how Blade would fit into whatever plans are in place for the next saga. Goth's latest comment makes clear nothing is set in stone, but it does suggest all hope is not yet lost for this troubled Marvel project.
