George R.R. Martin is one of the most acclaimed fantasy authors in history, and the most famous work of his career has found sustained streaming success long after the show went off the air. Martin most notably wrote A Song of Ice and Fire, the series of novels that inspired the live-action hit HBO show, Game of Thrones. The series ran for eight seasons between 2011 and 2019, and there has since been one successful offshoot released with more on the way. Following the recent spin-off developments last week, Game of Thrones has surged back into the HBO Max streaming charts, landing in the top 10 in several countries around the world.
The first Game of Thrones spin-off to be released was House of the Dragon. Set several hundred years before the original series, House of the Dragon follows House Targaryen in their most prominent years, along with their downfall. The show has aired two seasons to date, with the third coming next summer. HBO announced last week that House of the Dragon had been officially renewed for Season 4, and while it was originally thought Season 4 would be the last, this may not be the case anymore. Writer/showrunner Ryan Condal says more seasons may yet be on the way.
The second Game of Thrones offshoot to receive an exciting update last week was A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The show will debut on HBO Max on January 18, and HBO has confirmed that it’s already been renewed for Season 2. Collider reported a few months ago that the show would likely run for three seasons, with each installment adapting one novel in Martin’s Dunk and Egg series.
The ‘Game of Thrones’ Story May Yet Continue
Late last week, George R.R. Martin also confirmed that a Game of Thrones sequel series was in early development at HBO. This comes after the studio canceled a Jon Snow sequel series, which would have seen Kit Harington return to the role. It’s unclear at this time who will be the focal point of this mystery Game of Thrones sequel series, but there are plenty of directions to take the story. If this show does make it out of the development stage, it likely won’t be released any earlier than 2028 or 2029, possibly even later.
Be sure to stream Game of Thrones on HBO Max and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
