It is hard not to be excited about Harry Bosch's return on Prime Video, but the upcoming show already seems to face one impossible challenge.
Even though Prime Video has risen in the ranks to become the best streaming platform for dad shows, Bosch remains its best addition to the crime thriller genre. The streaming service has some of the best shows in the genre, like Reacher, Jack Ryan, and Cross. Bosch, however, remains in a league of its own, holding a lasting legacy that no other series can live up to.
Owing to this, it is not surprising that Prime Video is holding back from expanding the Bosch franchise with new spin-offs. After Ballard, which also proved to be a critical and commercial hit, Prime Video is introducing another Bosch prequel TV series, which will feature the main titular character as its lead. There is, however, one catch, which highlights the upcoming show's biggest challenge.
Bosch’s New Prequel Show Sounds Great, But It Will Not Include Titus Welliver In Any Capacity
The new Bosch prequel/spin-off titled, Bosch: Start of Watch, will serve as an origin story for the titular detective character. Interestingly, Cameron Monaghan, of the Shameless, Gotham, and Tron: Ares fame, has been cast to play a younger version of Harry Bosch. On paper, Bosch: Start of Watch sounds like an incredible addition to the franchise, but it will not have one crucial ingredient: Titus Welliver.
Ballard stood on its own feet and proved to be a worthy addition to the Bosch franchise. However, it cannot be denied that it also benefited a lot from Titus Willver's appearance as Harry Bosch in its story. The cameo alone was enough to hype many fans of the parent show, prompting them to check out the spin-off.
Unfortunately, for Bosch: Start of Watch, it cannot possibly feature Welliver since it is replacing him with someone else.
Titus Welliver Remains The Definitive Face Of Harry Bosch
Cameron Monaghan is a great casting choice for a younger version of Harry Bosch in the upcoming prequel series. The actor has previously shown incredible range in shows like Gotham and Shameless by playing complex characters like Ian Gallagher and Jerome Valeska. However, after all these years, it is hard to see anyone else other than Titus Welliver as Harry Bosch because of how brilliantly he captured the character.
Titus Welliver was not even the first casting choice for Harry Bosch. Before him, some big names like John Travolta were linked with the project. However, the Bosch book series' original author, Michael Connelly, saw him as the ideal actor for the role because of his ability to capture suffering and torment through his eyes (via Writers Digest).
As Bosch's success and lasting legacy on television have established, Connelly made the right call. Through his physical presence alone, Titus Welliver comes off as the perfect embodiment of the conflicted yet genius character Michael Connelly describes in his books.
While this is no reason to dismiss Cameron Monaghan since he, too, will likely be able to convincingly capture the character, Titus Welliver's absence will undoubtedly be felt in the upcoming Bosch spin-off.
