Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for DC's Batman/Deadpool #1One of the biggest comics events of the year just gave Nightwing the best nickname I've ever heard. Featured in DC's newest Batman/Deadpool crossover with Marvel, the legendary Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo reunited for a short back-up story starring Nightwing, who joins forces with none other than Laura Kinney's Wolverine.
An epic Marvel/DC team-up if there ever was one, the best part by far is Nightwing's brand-new name. Not only is it a name that perfectly defines Nightwing's status in the DC Universe, but it's also a name shared with Laura for the exact same reason in the Marvel Universe as well.
Gabby Kinney Just Gave Nightwing (And X-23's Wolverine) The Best New Name: "Nepo-Heroes"
Together, Dick Grayson's Nightwing and Laura Kinney's Wolverine brave Gotham's sewers to save the former X-23's clone sister Gabby and her pet honey badger (Jonathan) from Killer Croc in "Sticks and Snikts".
Later, they're all shown hanging out in Batgirl's Clock Tower, eating food and playing with Dick's dog Haley. This provides Gabby with the prime opportunity to ask if Batman is the former Robin's dad. When Grayson confirms that Batman is indeed his father, Gabby declares that Nightwing is a "Nepo-Hero" just like Laura and her own superhero father, the original Wolverine aka Logan.
A hilarious riff on "Nepo-Babies", a term attributed to those in the entertainment industry whose careers were seemingly advanced due to their previously famous, wealthy, and/or talented parents, Nightwing does admit the "Nepo-Hero" name is "kind of true."
Nepo-Hero Truly Is The Perfect Term For A Whole Class Of Superheroes
Nightwing and Wolverine cross escrima sticks and claws in DC/Marvel comic crossover teaser art by Bruno Redondo
Ultimately, the entire "Nepo-Hero" joke ends up being the perfect launchpad to the best final page of this short story, where Dick and Laura get to bond over their childhoods and the unique pressure that comes with trying to live up to the legends of their respective fathers, especially when Batman and Wolverine are both "the best at what they do."
However, the "Nepo-Hero" name is far too good to pass up, and it should absolutely be used in the future. After all, Dick and Laura aren't the only ones who could be considered Nepo-Heroes in their universes.
To name just a handful, DC has all the other Robins, Batgirl, Jon Kent, Wally West's Flash, Bart Allen's Impulse, Donny Troy, Helena Wayne's Huntress, and many more. Meanwhile, Marvel has the likes of Franklin and Valeria Richards, Sam Alexander's Nova, Daken, not to mention any of the Summers or Maximoff children.
It's a fairly widespread classification in its own right, though the best part is seeing how these Nepo-Heroes have managed to carve out their own stories and unique brands of heroism along the way. Case in point, Nightwing and Laura's Wolverine are easily two of the very best examples we have of Nepo-Heroes who've in many ways surpassed their heroic parents.
