Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Landman season 2, episode 3.Andy Garcia has two different identities in Landman season 2, and the difference between Gallino and Dan Morrell could use some clarification. Andy Garcia made his first appearance as Gallino at the end of Landman season 1, when he saved Tommy from the cartel leader Jimenez. It wasn't a straight rescue, though, as Gallino proved himself a villain when he informed Tommy that the cartel was going to strongarm its way into M-Tex and the oil business through Tommy.
Now, in Landman season 2, Gallino is making good on that promise. He's now funding Cooper's independent oil company and his plan to drill into "played out" wells, and he gave him a deal that was too good to be true. Gallino also still wants a working relationship with Tommy, and he's not above threatening him to get what he wants. Gallino's new alter ego has a part to play in his plans, so it's worth getting to know Dan Morrell and why he exists.
Andy Garcia’s Gallino Has Another Identity In Landman
Gallino toasts in Landman
Though Landman introduced us to him as Gallino, Andy Garcia's character also goes by the name Dan Morrell. Dan is the founder of Sonrisa, a financial and investment institution that decided to get into the oil industry via Cooper's new strategy. As we learned in Landman season 2, episode 3, he's married to an Italian woman, Bella, whom Tommy, Angela, and Cami met at the clubhouse. Bella also seems to think Dan is from Cuba and cannot return for political reasons, and she may not know of his cartel ties.
In terms of business, Dan and Sonrisa are in the investment industry. Dan even sees his ties to the cartel as Gallino as a type of investment and diversification of his assets. Interestingly enough, it also seems Dan is genuinely confident in Cooper and his business model. He told Tommy that Cooper had identified a blind spot in the oil industry by drilling in wells no other company would touch, and he seemed to truly believe his investment in Cooper is fair and mutually beneficial.
It's not perfectly clear why Gallino uses the name Dan Morrell in a professional, public-facing role, but there are a few likely explanations. Garcia's character is likely using two names to separate his cartel persona, Gallino, from his professional and legal persona, Dan, for his own protection, both legally and against cartel violence. Gallino is also a very secretive man, so having two identities likely helps him keep his lives separate from people like Bella.
In fact, Gallino may actually be the alias, and Dan Morrell may be the real name of Andy Garcia's character. Dan thinks of himself as an investor, and he goes to lengths to tell Tommy that he only views the cartel as an unorthodox investment. Dan likely uses Gallino so he can invest in an illicit industry like drugs. Most of his business deals, after all, have been entirely legal financial investments in oil, which Dan is more useful for than Gallino.
Why Tommy Can’t Stop Gallino Being His “Friend”
Billy Bob Thornton as Tommy Norris in Landman
Regardless of Gallino's two identities, one thing is clear: Tommy isn't going to get rid of him easily. Gallino has repeatedly mentioned his desire to work with Tommy, and his investment in Cooper's business and future is proof of that. Tommy isn't going to get Gallino to stop wanting to be "friends" with him because Gallino thinks Tommy is a good investment. As he said to Cami, Gallino invests in people he believes in, and Tommy is one of those people.
Being "friends" with Tommy unlocks so many opportunities for Gallino. Because of Tommy, Gallino has Cooper wrapped around his finger. He also met Cami because of Tommy, and it's possible that Gallino has a plan to start "investing" in her and M-Tex as well now that he "believes" in her. Tommy is Gallino's gateway into the oil industry, and he's going to use Tommy for as long as he can, whether Tommy likes it or not.

Of course, Gallino's "investments" are also less than legal. This is a man with many plans, many tentacles working in the shadows, and many ways to make sure he gets what he wants. Tommy is a central part of Gallino's investment plan, and he's not going to let him just walk away. That, coupled with the fact that Tommy is likely one of the few people who knows that Dan Morrell is in bed with the cartel, means he'll never let Tommy go.
In short, Tommy won't be rid of Gallino until the latter is dead, imprisoned, or lets him go. He's too important to Gallino, and Gallino sees too much profit to be made in a man as hardworking and capable as Tommy. It's not entirely clear what Gallino/Dan Morrell has planned for Tommy, Cooper, and potentially Cami and M-Tex in Landman season 2, but there's a very low chance that it's good, and a very low chance Tommy will be able to get out of it.
