All throughout the Arizona high school football season, four teams have remained at the top of the conversation of best teams out of the Grand Canyon State. On Saturday night, two out of the four separated themselves and booked their ticket to the AIA Open Division state championship game.

Chandler used a dominating defensive effort and held on to defeat No. 16 nationally ranked Hamilton, 30-17. The Wolves will face Basha, which beat Liberty, for the Open Division crown. The Wolves were able to avenge a regular season loss to the Huskies from back on Nov. 7 when they fell, 55-41, to Hamilton.

It took a mere five seconds for Chandler to get on the scoreboard as they scored on a safety after a high snap for Hamilton.

Hamilton entered the contest as one of the highest scoring teams in the state, but for most of the game looked like a shell of their selves offensively without starting quarterback Jaxson Sculley. Chandler raced out to a 23-3 advantage as they received scoring plays from Will Mencl, who scored three rushing touchdowns on the night.

The largest lead the Wolves had in the game was 30-3 with 10:42 remaining in the contest and that’s when the Huskies would begin to show some signs of life offensively behind senior signal caller Daniel Vaita, who threw a touchdown pass to freshman Roman Oliver in the final period.

Now Chandler will prepare to take on Basha on Saturday for Arizona high school football’s AIA Open Division title. The contest is slated for 6 p.m. Pacific Time, 9 p.m. Eastern Time.
