Manchester United remain short in several positions despite shelling out big money during the summer transfer window.

One position that remains a concern for the Red Devils is left-back, where Diogo Dalot and Patrick Dorgu have been unconvincing.

Dorgu joined Man Utd in January for around £29.4 million, and after struggling for the first six months, many expected him to find his feet and start delivering the goods.

Unfortunately, he has not kicked on and continues to underwhelm. Man United boss Ruben Amorim wants to see improvement in his decision-making.

In his presser ahead of Man Utd’s clash with Crystal Palace, Amorim said, “I think it’s the decision (making). He needs to be calmer playing the game.

“You can feel the anxiety every time Patrick touches the ball. I can feel the anxiety. You remember the shot against Everton.

“That was easier than the decision he had to make against the guys (for Denmark) from Scotland. He made a great decision, and I saw it when he played in Italy.

“But here is different, and sometimes the pressure is hard for them in the beginning, but he has time to improve.”

Amorim needs to risk it with Luke Shaw at left-back

Amorim may have his reasons for using Luke Shaw at centre-back to preserve his fitness, but United can no longer afford to ignore where he is most effective.

Shaw is, by far, the most accomplished left-back at the club in terms of positional awareness, attacking balance, and defensive intelligence.

Dalot has looked uncomfortable on his weaker side, while Dorgu, though raw with potential, is not ready to shoulder that responsibility in a high-pressure United shirt.

Even at 70 or 80%, Shaw offers more control, better decision-making, and greater composure in build-up.

If the aim is to stabilise the back line and restore some consistency, then Amorim must roll the dice and trust Shaw in his natural position.

Managing his fitness is one thing, but hiding him from his best role makes even less sense when his deputies are performing poorly.
