90+5’ – There’s the final whistle. Everton’s setpiece defending once again brutally exposed. But the midfield looking so vulnerable without Gueye is also a big concern. 4-1 Newcastle at Everton, their first away win since the beginning of April.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement90’ – Five minutes to be added on here.
87’- Barry comes off for Beto, the remaining Blues in the stadium give him an acknowledging round of applause.
84’ – KDH corner on the left, cleared, falls to Alcaraz but this time he cannot replicate his previous shot and the ball balloons over.
79’ – Everton intentionally exposed here as they push forward, Ramsey alone on goal on Pickford, goalie saves. Next set of changes for the Blues – Ndiaye and Grealish go off, Tyler Dibling and Dwight McNeil are on.
72’ – Ndiaye lovely cross, Barry header goes over but that looks like it came off Burns. Enemy #1 Craig Pawson wants nothing to do with it and the whole stadium howls.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement70’ – No chalking this one off. KDH with brilliant control to bring the ball down with his back to goal, takes another touch to position himself and another to stab home past Ramsdale, it’s 4-1 now to the visitors. Dewsbury-Hall is in some form.
65’ – Great cross into the box from Mykolenko, Barry mishits his header, gets a second chance with Burns out of position and miskicks his shot into the goal! That’s his first Everton goal!! Or is it??The replays show that the ball came off Barry’s hand when he missed his initial header, and the ref chalks the goal off. Poor Thierno’s wait continues.
60’ – Everton corner, taken short, ball into the box and cleared. O’Brien long throw coming in. Cleared. Grealish cross into the box, O’Brien heads it down for Barry but the Magpies can clear. The Toon traveling support are loving this, making fun of Pickford and his two errors today.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement57’ – Barnes 1-on-1 with Pickford.. goalie does well to save. Corner to the Toon. Pings about in the box, Woltemade shot.. off Pickford, goalline clearance. Another cross into the box, Pickford hesitates and Thiaw hammers a header home unchallenged, 4-0. The humiliation continues with over half an hour to play.
53’ – Grealish wins a corner off Livramento. Garner inswinger, comes off the near post Barnes and Ramsdale parry away! Ball rolls out of the box… Alcaraz strides up and cranks off a shot that absolutely thunders off the other upright and comes back out. Just going to be that kind of day.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement52’ – Excellent control from Barry on the edge of the box, but instead of turning and shooting, looks for Ndiaye who has a weak shot straight at Ramsdale.
50’ – Barnes cross into the box, clash of heads between Elanga and Myko at the back post, the Everton defender is down.
46’ – Second half underway, as expected Iroegbunam is off for Alcaraz. Garner looks like the sole defensive midfielder with KDH on his left and Charly on the right.
Halftime Thoughts – Two straight games an Everton midfielder with a 1/10 performance. Everton might have been better off with ten men today rather than going with Iroegbunam.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement45’ – Iroegbunam strikes again. Makes a complete hash of a tackle on Elanga, he finds Woltemade all alone with Pickford charging out, and the German striker chips the goalie to make it 3-0 at halftime. What a disaster this has turned into, exactly like the Spurs game.
38’ – If the Blues can pull one back now, it’ll make for a good second half. Energy isn’t flagging yet, which is good. Simply not enough Blues in the box to keep swinging crosses into the box for, especially with how good Newcastle are in the air.
35’ – Miley is wide open on the Everton left again, lucky his cross into the box is poor.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement33’ – Great passing movement between KDH, Grealish and Ndiaye, but the on-loan City player doesn’t continue his run and the chance is wasted.
30’ – Lovely ball to Barry from Grealish, but Burns muscles him off the ball. Half-hour mark, Everton have not been bad with the ball, but have been amateur in their own box and have paid the price.
29’ – Now Lewis Hall in open space, shot partly blocked by Keane and goes over Pickford, and off the top of the bar, whew. Another Miley corner from the right, O’Brien fouled and it’s a freekick.
25’ – Everton make a complete hash of clearing their area and are 2-0 down now. Garner blocks a cross, Iroegbunam can’t clear, ball ping-pongs around until it falls to Miley on the edge of the box. He hammers his volley straight at Pickford who gets his save all wrong and somehow parries it down and into his own net. Comedy of errors and the Toffees are two down.
24’ – Miscommunication between Pickford and O’Brien, and the defender has to hack the ball away for a corner with Barnes lurking. Corner from Everton’s right, cleared much better this time.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement22’ – If it’s any consolation, Newcastle scored first in their last three away games, and lost all of them. Toffees have 69% of the possession right now.
17’ – Grealish finds Dewsbury-Hall in the inside left channel, shot blocked for a corner. Corner is cleared but Everton continue to press, and the crowd is getting louder. Play is stopped as Joelinton is receiving medical attention.
15’ – Good spell of possession with a shot blocked in the box.
13’ – Garner finds Grealish in the channel, his cutback is cleared, falls to Garner in the box, shot is poor. Everton are alive at least.
10’ – Everton go down the other side and Ndiaye’s cross is put out for a corner, which then becomes a throw-in. Myko long ball into the box, Tarky chests it down for Keane to fire.. off Burn and another corner. Looping inswinger from Dewsbury-Hall, Keane shirt-pull from Joelinton ignored and Barry header goes over the bar.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement8’ – Livramento wins a corner on the Everton left now. Hall puts it low into the box, cleared by Ndiaye, but given right back to the Magpies. Now Barnes gets between Tarkowski and Keane, his shot is blocked by Keane and bounces over the goal for another corner. Hall inswinger and Pickford puts it over the bar from his goalline, but the ref blows for a foul on the keeper.
5’ – Newcastle certainly have their tails up early after that goal with the bulk of the possession early as Everton are struggling to string together passes.
3’ – This was exactly what Tottenham did to Everton in the Blues first ever home defeat at Hill Dickinson, with a corner into the congested six-yard box.
1’ – Everton kick off. Woltemade immediately turns Keane in the middle, and plays Elanga through. The winger is faster than Mykolenko and gets off a shot at the far post, Pickford plays it safe and parries it wide for a corner. Corner into the six-yard box, Pickford stays on his line and an unchallenged Thiaw rises highest and heads into the goal from point-blank range. 55 seconds in, and Everton are behind 1-0.
