Director Gareth Edwards is probably sworn to secrecy about what went down on the sets of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, but others associated with that infamous production are slowly beginning to shed more light on what happened. Although Rogue One was a critical and commercial hit, it was widely speculated that Edwards wasn't involved in bringing it home. He was also not able to get another movie off the ground until seven years later, when he released the original science-fiction film The Creator. The movie earned praise for its scrappy aesthetic and Edwards' claims that he operated in a highly cost-effective manner, but it also courted controversy for its depiction of artificial intelligence. The Creator underperformed at the box office, but has the makings of a cult hit. The film's credentials will be put to the test this December, when it lands on Prime Video.

Released in 2023, the movie made a little over $100 million worldwide against a reported budget of $80 million. This wasn't nearly as much as it should've made, despite the controlled budget. Edwards claimed that a movie like it would've normally cost twice as much, which would've put it in the same ballpark as his Godzilla reboot. Starring John David Washington and Gemma Chan, The Creator opened to mostly positive reviews, but was controversial in some corners of the internet for seemingly being pro-AI. It currently holds a 67% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics' consensus reads, "Visually stunning and packed with spectacular set pieces, The Creator serves up timely, well-acted sci-fi that satisfies in the moment even if it lacks substance."

Gareth Edwards' Latest Film Is 'Jurassic World Rebirth'

In her review, Collider's Maggie Lovitt wrote, "The script might have glaring flaws and painfully ambiguous morals, but The Creator is a truly remarkable piece of original science fiction storytelling." Edwards didn't wait as long to bag his next project, this year's Jurassic World Rebirth. The movie entered production without a director at the helm, and Edwards was brought in at the last moment, mostly to execute ideas that had already been conceptualized. The movie earned mixed reviews, but was a grand box office success, grossing nearly $900 million worldwide.

You can watch The Creator on Prime Video beginning December 20, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
