It's hard to nail down just what era of Final Fantasy is the most iconic. While many fans will quickly name the PlayStation generation because it was their first, Final Fantasy has been creating memories since the original Nintendo Entertainment System, all the way through the current generation.
Over on Steam, Drakantos looks like it's going to hit a lot of the right notes, especially when it comes to replicating the Super Nintendo era of JRPGs. Thankfully, it's also free.
Drakantos Looks Absolutely Gorgeous
And It's Free-To-Play
Revealed by Wingeon Game Studios, Drakantos is a "free-to-play MMORPG with a nostalgia pixel art style," and promises fast-paced action combat with "more than 20 unique playable heroes." Described as a cooperative experience, you'll be thrust into the world of Eldras, where you'll battle enemy hordes and uncover the secrets of the land as you play "hundreds of missions."
The MMO aspect is seemingly going to be a massive part of Drakantos, given that there's housing involved, as well as a market where you can trade items with other players, and there's even a guild system and global events. It's incredibly ambitious for a game like this, though a large number of retro-looking games do have huge online components, so it's certainly possible.
In case you're wondering, there is a hint as to what paid elements might be: "Unlock exclusive icons, titles, and cool skins to further personalize your profile and heroes. Collect dozens of charming pets and make your interactions more lively with over 30 emotes per hero, each featuring unique voice lines!"
While there's no date set for Drakantos yet, the studio is running beta weekends, and held one earlier this year in July. So far, the team is listening to feedback from the beta and incorporating it into the full game, so there seems to be some runway left until the full release.
The Final Fantasy Vibes Are Strong
As Well As Chrono Trigger
While Drakantos forgoes a traditional class system in favor of unique heroes, the Final Fantasy vibes are very strong, especially when it comes to the aesthetics. I'm sure we'll see plenty of references to old school RPGs as well, including many references from multiple generations. We can only hope that the story follows suit as well.
If you've already played every Final Fantasy game multiple times over and want something new, Drakantos could be a way to scratch that same itch. Ideally, the monetization element is fair, and you can finish the game with a handful of heroes without having to spend money.
