Ever since the year 2000, the TimeSplitters franchise has remained in the hearts of a multitude of fans. The unique setup of traveling through time to take down enemies across history is fascinating, and it's even caught the eye of many modding groups over the years, thanks to the setting's limitless potential.
Although TimeSplitters 4 has been long canceled, fans have been looking for a way to revive the franchise for ages, and now they've done it with TimeSplitters Rewind, as detailed on the team's blog. The project is now available in Early Access form after a long wait, so you can check out this fan revival for yourself.
TimeSplitters Is Finally Back In TimeSplitters Rewind
And It Feels Good
For roughly a decade, about 200 contributors have worked on TimeSplitters Rewind to get it ready, including some AAA game developers and hobbyists. The idea is to capture the essence of the entire TimeSplitters trilogy in one massive game, while forging its own identity that can't really be classified as a remake or remaster.
Here is what you can expect in the Early Access build of TimeSplitters Rewind:
- 28 maps
- Online and offline story mode
- 51 arcade leagues
- 32 challenges
- 96 characters
- 41 weapons
- 20 arcade game modes
- Team Elimination (new game mode)
- Last Stand (updated game mode)
- Online and offline arcade with bots
- 10-player online play
As you can see, this fan project is a massive undertaking, and has features that many AAA games don't even have throughout their lifecycle.
You Can Play An Early Version Now
It's Up For Download
Over on the game's official website, you can find an Early Access build for TimeSplitters Rewind. Fascinatingly, the site also has a complete history of how and why this project came into being, as a direct result of the cancellation of TimeSplitters 4 in 2008, due to the insolvency of the original developer, Free Radical Design.
Even if TimeSplitters never comes back officially, it's nice to know that a dedicated group of people are still keeping the memory of this series alive. Hopefully, this project is able to stay in active development and become the absolute best it can be. It's already packed, so it'll be hard to imagine what else the team could cram in over time.
