Blade Runner's upcoming reboot sounds exciting, but a new Apple TV cyberpunk show will be an even bigger event in the science fiction genre.
Serving as a follow-up to the two Blade Runner movies, Prime Video's Blade Runner 2099 will be a miniseries, scheduled to premiere sometime in 2026. Considering how seminal the Blade Runner movies, especially the Ridley Scott one, have been, the series carries a lot of high expectations and is anticipated to be one of the most thrilling additions to sci-fi TV in the upcoming year.
However, as enthralling as Blade Runner 2099 may already seem, it is not half as electrifying as Apple TV's upcoming take on an iconic cyberpunk novel. While there is room for both shows to thrive in the science fiction genre, the Apple TV sci-fi show could go on to become one of the greatest sci-fi events of modern times.
Neuromancer Can Become An Even Bigger Cultural Phenomenon Than Blade Runner
Neuromancer Book Cover
With Silka Luisa (of the Shining Girls fame) as its creator and Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer as its leads, Blade Runner 2099 sure does look promising. However, considering the influence of its source material on the sci-fi genre, Neuromancer has the potential to become one of the biggest modern sci-fi franchises if Apple TV delivers a worthy adaptation.
Apple TV's Neuromancer heavily benefits from the fact that the original book's author, William Gibson, has been directly involved with its production. This will seemingly ensure that the adaptation does justice to the source material instead of straying too far from it. Unlike Blade Runner 2099, which follows up two brilliant movies, Neuromancer also arrives without the burden of a live-action legacy.
Only one William Gibson book, The Peripheral, has received a major TV adaptation so far, which was also canceled after one season. Neuromancer will be the first major TV take of Gibson's work after Prime Video's The Peripheral, which makes it one of its kind in the sci-fi genre.
With many highly acclaimed and commercially successful sci-fi shows, like Severance, Silo, Murderbot, and Dark Matter, Apple TV has consistently proven that it delivers some of the most compelling high-concept sci-fi shows. The streaming service's history with the genre makes it hard not to believe that it could potentially become the perfect home for Neuromancer's first major adaptation.
Given how a lot is going on in Neuromancer's favor, it seems far more exciting than Prime Video's extension of the Blade Runner franchise. Both will be incredible additions to the genre, but Neuromancer could be a game changer for sci-fi and pave the way for more cyberpunk book adaptations.
Blade Runner’s Future Installments Could Benefit From Neuromancer’s Success
William Gibson's Neuromancer was one of the few influential novels in the sci-fi genre that paved the way for other neon-noir stories, hacker-driven plots, and narratives revolving around megacorp paranoia. If its adaptation succeeds both critically and commercially on Apple TV, studios would be encouraged to invest in adaptations of other similar books, like Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash, Walter William's Hardwired, and Gibson's Neuromancer follow-ups, Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive.
Like Blade Runner 2099, Neuromancer is also expected to premiere sometime in 2026.
Other major cyberpunk franchises, like Blade Runner, could also get a major boost from Neuromancer's success on Apple TV. Even though Prime Video's Blade Runner 2099 is a miniseries, the streaming service could consider expanding the franchise with more TV or movie additions if cyberpunk proves to be a bankable subgenre in sci-fi.
