Boruto may have had its fair share of controversies, but one of the most frustrating for even diehard fans was the introduction of Scientific Ninja Tools. While their application would be fleshed out later in the series, they featured prominently at the start, and their poster-child tech, the Scroll Cartridge, actively undermined a ninja's main assets.
The problems raised by Scientific Ninja Tools are as contentious as any real-world tech advancements that replace traditionally human tasks, but Boruto: Two Blue Vortex appears to be subtly bringing it back. It's most recently been on full display with Sumire Kakei installing Scientific Ninja Tools into Sasuke's sword for Boruto, making a strong case for the tech to stay.
A Classic Sasuke Weapon May Redeem Boruto's Worst Change

Scientific Ninja Tools by the time of Boruto: Two Blue Vortex were far less prominent, partially due to Kara no longer featuring, but also to give more focus to what the fans craved: more authentic ninja action. But Sumire's enhancement of Sasuke's sword for Boruto, converting it to a Scientific Ninja Tool without overriding its purpose in chapter #28.
The enhancement to Sasuke's new Sword of Kusanagi, added the ability for the blade to constantly siphon a small amount of Boruto's chakra so he can imbue it with his Uchiha-Style Blade Technique: Hagoromo without needing to focus. Additionally, Sumire installed a fail-safe with it completely depleting the chakra of any user beyond her, Boruto, or Sasuke.
This is certainly the right balance of Scientific Ninja Tools existing enough to be relevant while not being depowered to the point of effective retcon. But it's also not the only careful application of the tech. In Boruto: Two Blue Vortex chapter #3, Boruto is accompanied by one of Koji Kashin's artificial chakra-controlled toads as he tracks down the Ten-Tails.
It's a far cry from Boruto's jaded views on it after he used them and subsequently was disqualified from the Chunin Exams.
This latest instance, though, is directly acknowledged, with Boruto openly accepting it. It's a far cry from Boruto's jaded views on it after he used them and subsequently was disqualified from the Chunin Exams. It's also noteworthy that this is happening while Katasuke Tōno continues to be absent, with Sumire seemingly as his successor. The ninja world is moving forward.
Boruto's Use of Scientific Ninja Tools Was Terrible (But Warranted)
Boruto caught using Scientific Ninja Tools in Boruto Naruto the Movie
Scientific Ninja Tools and their chief proponent, Katasuke, were presented as an optimistic asset for any ninja arsenal in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations. But as early as chapter #4, Boruto was caught by his father by using a concealed Scroll Cartridge to conjure an unusually large amount of Shadow Clones, with him famously only being able to use four.
The issue isn't with the tech itself, but rather, that Boruto used the tech to cheat in the Chunin Exams in his publicized match against Shikadai Nara, the favored contender. Beyond this point, the manga would continuously introduce ways in which the Scientific Ninja Tools could be used for good, but the Naruto fandom was difficult to sway.
Katasuke saw these tools as an aid for ninjas, such as Naruto who lost his arm in his fight with Sasuke, or Ao of the Mist, who reminded Boruto that their uses aren't necessarily for good or evil in chapter #17. By chapter #18, the series even features Boruto warming up to its more wholesome applications.
Beyond prosthetics for cute animals and drones, the series from this point sparingly featured Scientific Ninja Tools such as used by Kara. While more suitably ninja-like tools served as an enhancement rather than a replacement, like the Smoke-Flash Bombs or chakra-enhanced climbing gear, others, it's exciting to see them featuring, even subtly, in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex.
