Red Dead Redemption has become the most iconic western franchise in video game history, with two incredible games that are now considered the genre's benchmark. Though nothing has officially been announced for the next Red Dead Redemption game, players feel it's only a matter of time before we see RDR3.
In response to speculation from Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser, fans on Reddit agree there's one perfect choice in terms of setting for Red Dead Redemption 3: the California Gold Rush. It's a period in history ripe for a Red Dead Redemption game, and fans argue it is an ideal setup for a new storyline, characters, and more.
Red Dead Redemption 3 Will "Probably" Happen
In a recent interview with Lex Friedman, Rockstar co-founder and Red Dead Redemption 1 and 2 writer Dan Houser hinted there would "probably" be another Red Dead Redemption game at some point in the future, despite him hoping against it, a sentiment echoed by Arthur Morgan voice actor Roger Clark in a post to X:
Both fans and Dan Houser would agree that the first two Red Dead Redemption games have a nearly perfect story told across both entries, and a third game would definitely need to avoid ruining that in any way. As such, fans argue that any new game in the Red Dead Redemption universe would need a completely new approach, with new characters, story arcs, and most importantly, a brand-new setting.
Red Dead Redemption 3 Needs A Completely New Setting
There's no question that the next Red Dead game will need to make some major changes from the first two, and fans agree that the Gold Rush is a no-brainer. Historically speaking, it is an ideal time period for a character-driven western tale, with endless points of entry on the West coast.
A Red Dead Redemption game set in California or Oregon during the Gold Rush would open up countless opportunities to explore new gameplay mechanics and introduce new characters and feuds, not to mention a new landscape to explore. Whether we ever see Red Dead Redemption 3 become official is still up for question, but fans will hold on hope that if we do get it, it's set during the Gold Rush.
