Redditor u/PixelSirennn shared the story in the subreddit “cats,” where it earned over 28,000 upvotes.
“My uncle moved to a new house and abandoned his cat. I brought him home, he's a little sad,” they wrote.
According to the U.K. charity Cats Protection, moving is a really big change for cats, who prefer routine and familiarity—making planning ahead key to a smoother transition. It advises allocating a safe, familiar-smelling room at both the old and new home, ensuring clean water and litter trays, and allowing the cat to settle in gradually rather than being forced to explore the whole house immediately.

Redditors rallied around this cat and the rescuer with a wave of supportive comments.
“He doesn’t know it yet but he got an upgrade,” shared one user.
“I hate that people do this, as it really affects the pet. However, this one has a happy ending. I am proud of you for bringing him home with you. Kitty will be sad for a while, especially if he had a long relationship with your uncle. Being in your place, he will come around eventually, when he feels more comfortable,” wrote another.
“That cat is so lucky you were there to rescue him. He's beautiful, btw,” said another.

"Sorry but your uncle doesn’t deserve a kitty if he did that. Glad you took the kitty,” chimed in another.
"My sister did this. So my parents took him in. I didn't want another cat but apparently he decided that I was his person. He didn't care for anyone else unless I wasn't home. I miss my little Nemo,” shared one user’s similar experience.
“Screw your Uncle. That gentleman got a fantastic new owner in you OP,” concluded another.
