With the Nintendo Switch 2 now comfortably on a role, I'm sure most gamers are asking themselves: what's next for The Legend Of Zelda franchise?

Obviously Nintendo Switch 2 gamers haven't been hurting for Zelda so far. Tears Of The Kingdom and Breath Of The Wild got incredible upgrades, and Echoes Of Wisdom and Link's Awakening received a nice bump in framerate and resolution too. We also just got the Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Inprisonment spinoff earlier this month. But what the people really want is a new main entry.

There's Nothing Like A New Zelda Game

It always hits different

Let's face it, nothing hits quite as hard as the reveal for a new Legend Of Zelda game. And now we've started to see what the Nintendo Switch 2 can do with the likes of Cyberpunk 2077 and Star Wars Outlaws, the concept of a Zelda game backed by a genuinely impressive amount of power is an intriguing one.

A good example of the kind of thing we can expect comes from YouTube channel Digital Dreams, which uploaded a video of The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild running with 8K visuals on an RTX 5090.

The result, as you can see above, is absolutely phenomenal. While we all know we're not getting 8K resolution on a Switch 2 anytime soon, Nintendo has proven time and time again that it can use the tech it has to make some very pretty games. And what it has this time is a genuinely powerful console.

What Can We Expect From Zelda On Switch 2?

It's too soon to say

The next mainline Legend Of Zelda game is obviously a way off yet, but I think we can be fairly certain Nintendo is sticking with the newer open-world approach, while probably moving away from the overall style and timeline of the Switch games. Personally, I'd give a few years of my life for a fully open-world sequel to Wind Waker, but I can't ever see that happening. The idea of sailing around an open world filled with dozens of unique islands does fill me with a real sense of joy though. Maybe if I wish really hard and/or make a deal with the devil.

For now, Zelda fans will just have to busy themselves with the classic games and hope that the next Nintendo Direct, whenever it comes, gives us a glimpse of the future of our green-capped friend.
