While disagreements and verbal banters between NBA players are usually confined to professional comparisons and competitive tension that exists only until both are active in the league, the situation between Draymond Green and Kenyon Martin has evolved far beyond that.
What started as a standard argument has now turned into a personal attempt to discredit one another, almost as if each is determined to convince the world that they were superior and the other merely overachieved. The conflict added a new chapter recently, when "K-Mart" reminded Green about how he was never a "swing" but a "series-deciding" player.

The recent spark came when Draymond used Nick Young to illustrate his point. While the former DPOY's intention was to defend Nick's credentials by pointing out how he might have averaged 4.3 points per game in the 2018 Western Conference Finals, he made plays that swung the balance and brought positive momentum in Golden State's favor.
Draymond used that example to illustrate that while Young was successful as a "swing" player, Martin wasn't, primarily when the New Jersey Nets relied heavily on him in the 2002 NBA Finals.

On an episode of the "Gills Arena Show," he educated Green that even at the age of 24, he stepped up on the big stage, averaging a team-high 22.0 points over that series and held his end of the bargain, even when he was against Shaq and Kobe's well-knit and more experienced Los Angeles Lakers.
"What the f–k is this clown here talking about, man? Who is swinging what series? I'm the leading scorer on the f—ing team, in the playoffs and the regular season," Martin said. "Who's swinging? Who? What? J-Kidd, yes, was a bigger name. J-Kidd was First Team All-NBA. I led the league in scoring and f—ing rebounding. I don't fit that f—ing criteria. I'm sorry, like I don't swing series, I help win series…. He made it personal, I didn't."

Interestingly, after firing shots at Green, Martin clarified that he did not bring up Nick Young to belittle his contributions, acknowledging that Young played an essential role in Golden State's 2018 championship. His frustration instead stemmed from Draymond making the debate personal, prompting Martin to use Young only because Green brought him into the argument first as a way to justify his own value during the Nets era.
Given just how high emotions are running for both these NBA personalities, at this stage, it appears that both Martin and Green have reached a point where neither is backing down. Each seems intent on undermining the other's career and legacy, attempting to one-up every narrative with a sharper response. And given how often both are in front of a microphone in the social media age, neither one is going to stop from belittling the other.
