Cyberpunk 2 is one of five CD Projekt Red games currently in development, and the studio has offered some new insight on its status. Previously known as Project Orion, Cyberpunk 2 will follow the events of smash hit Cyberpunk 2077, but exact details remain incredibly scarce. Screen Rant previously reported that numerous Cyberpunk 2 jobs are open, and now word from CDPR appears to confirm our assumptions about the game's current development state.
According to a financial briefing given by CD Projekt Red (via IGN), teams working on Cyberpunk 2 around the globe are scaling up in staff. CDPR's studios in Boston, Warsaw, and Vancouver are specifically adding more development personnel as the project grows in its pre-production state. As the company continues "laying the foundations" for Cyberpunk 2, it expects hiring to continue through the next two calendar years.
Earnings Call Reveals Cyberpunk 2 Is In Pre-Production
Official updates from CD Projekt Red on Cyberpunk 2 have been few and far between. Principal development efforts have been focused on The Witcher 4, which this past summer starred in an Unreal Engine tech demo – not necessarily gameplay footage, but an overview of some of the ideas being put into the game. Cyberpunk 2 remains in a relatively early state of development, but CD Projekt Red offered some insight into how fast the project is ramping up.
At the end of July 2025, 116 people were working on Cyberpunk 2. By the end of October 2025 – three months later – that number had increased to 135 developers. More than two years of continued hiring will see that number grow even further through the end of 2027, and more existing staff will likely transition from The Witcher 4 as it nears completion.
How Long Before We Actually Get Cyberpunk 2?

If CD Projekt Red's gradual increase in staff for the project is any indication, Cyberpunk 2 likely won't arrive before 2028. Game development is only taking longer as they grow more ambitious, and CDPR is among many companies that have grown to see a very slow release cycle. 2020's Cyberpunk 2077 was released five years after The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and we are just now approaching 2077's fifth anniversary – with no indication of when The Witcher 4 is expected to launch.
That said, it's all essentially a guessing game at this point; Cyberpunk 2 is too early in production, and too little is known about it to make any sort of informed estimate. It's a decent sign that CDPR is hiring so many developers, but it's not necessarily an indication that Cyberpunk 2 development will be any speedier. At this rate, it's likely that Cyberpunk 2 will release on the next generation of consoles, and we're not likely to see any sort of trailer for it until after The Witcher 4 releases.
