Despite being a highly requested property for a Magic: The Gathering adaptation, the backlash surrounding the upcoming Monster Hunter Secret Lair resulted in it being suddenly postponed with no new release date in sight.
Originally slated for a December 1 release date, an announcement on the official Wizards website for Magic: The Gathering reveals that the Secret Lair superdrop has been pushed into 2026 in order to redesign the set with Capcom's support. While Wizards of the Coast hasn't given any details on whether the set will be remade or adjusted from the ground up, we can expect an announcement within the next few months at least.
Monster Hunter's Secret Lair Has Been Delayed To 2026
A Longer Wait For Fans Of Both Franchises
Following its confusing press release reveal just a few weeks ago, the decision to pull Magic: The Gathering's upcoming Monster Hunter Secret Lair set wasn't made lightly, which Wizards of the Coast emphasized in the announcement. Although Secret Lair sets have been temporarily pulled in the past over manufacturing or production errors, the scale of reconstructing the entire Monster Hunter superdrop is a massive undertaking to go through with.
Despite the release date concerns about competing with the massive sets dropping in 2026, it's not hard to see why Wizards of the Coast decided to delay the Monster Hunter superdrop based on the overwhelmingly negative reaction after the excitement from the initial collaboration wore off.
With complaints including misspelled card names, the absence of unique cards instead of purely reprints, and the complete lack of equipment cards and mechanics that take advantage of what makes Monster Hunter so special in the first place, Magic: The Gathering's decision to push back the set is going over well with fans already.
Secret Lair Sets Should Be Held To A Higher Standard
Living Up To Their Higher Cost Of Entry
With the premium pricing of Secret Lair sets like the Magic: The Gathering X Monster Hunter Superdrop, it makes sense why fans would be so upset by the apparent lack of quality of confusing design decisions in the card selection, even without the backing of a massive franchise behind it.
Some fans have even speculated that it was Capcom itself stepping in to address the overwhelming complaints about how surprising it was for Wizards of the Coast. Nothing official has been revealed, however.
While it's a bit disappointing for Monster Hunter fans that they will have to wait even longer to get their hands on Magic: The Gathering's newly themed cards, the decision to move forward with the changes will likely bring an even better selection that is even more fitting for the beloved series.
Combined with recent improvements to Secret Lair to fight back against scalping, the controversy surrounding the Monster Hunter collaboration could hopefully prevent similar issues in the future as well. Ensuring a more consistent release quality will help provide more smash hits like PlayStation's latest Magic: The Gathering Superdrop.
