By Gabe WhisnantShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberTwo National Guard soldiers were shot Wednesday near the White House, and are in critical condition, according to the Associated Press.
AP reported around 3:15 p.m. that the suspect has also been shot.
Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem posted on X, "Please join me in praying for the two National Guardsmen who were just shot moments ago in Washington D.C. @DHSgov is working with local law enforcement to gather more information."
Emergency vehicles rushed to the area as authorities responded to reports of gunfire. The Joint DC Task Force said it was investigating an incident near the White House but declined to confirm whether National Guard members were among the victims. The Metropolitan Police Department also said it was responding to a shooting but released no further details.

A spokesperson for Mayor Muriel Bowser said city officials were closely monitoring the situation. President Donald Trump was at his West Palm Beach golf course at the time of the shooting. Vice President JD Vance was visiting troops in Kentucky at the time of the shooting.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement, “The White House is aware and actively monitoring this tragic situation. The President has been briefed.”
Hundreds of National Guard members from Washington, D.C., and several states have been patrolling the nation’s capital since August, when President Trump issued an emergency order that federalized the local police force and brought in Guard units from eight states and the district.
