Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Police said Wednesday that a suspect has been taken into custody following a shooting near the White House.
“The scene is secured. One suspect is in custody,” the department announced in a post on X.
Authorities have cordoned off several blocks near 17th and I Streets NW as emergency responders remain on site. The identities and conditions of the victims, reported to be members of the National Guard, have not yet been released.

Two members of the National Guard were shot near the White House on Wednesday afternoon, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed in a statement posted to social media.
The incident unfolded at the corner of 17th and I Streets NW, where police and emergency responders quickly surrounded the area and cordoned off several blocks. One apparent victim was seen being loaded into an ambulance with visible injuries.
Authorities said one suspect was taken into custody, though the condition and identities of the Guardsmen have not yet been released.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said officials are “aware and actively monitoring this tragic situation,” adding that President Trump, who is in Florida for the Thanksgiving holiday, has been briefed.
Secret Service agents and officials from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were also on the scene as investigators worked to gather more information.
