Apple TV has several shows dominating the conversation right now, but perhaps none are as popular as The Last Frontier. The new wintry neo-Western stars Jason Clarke (Oppenheimer) and Dominic Cooper (Mamma Mia!), and it follows Frank Remnick (Clarke), a U.S. Marshal who looks after a quiet area in Alaska. Everything changes when a plane full of violent inmates crashes in his jurisdiction, leaving him to clean up a dangerous mess. The first eight episodes of The Last Frontier are now streaming on Apple TV with two more on the way, and the show is still one of the top three most popular series on the platform.

Although it’s dominating streaming charts right now, neither critics nor audiences have been hot on The Last Frontier through eight episodes. The show currently sits at scores of 46% from critics and 56% from audiences on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes. It’s always surprising when even general audiences give any movie or show such a rotten score. The series captured the heart of Collider’s Jeff Ewing, though, who gave it an 8/10 in his review. The Last Frontier has also drawn comparisons to both Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone and True Detective, due to its neo-Western ambiance and investigative elements.

The Last Frontier was written and created for television by Jon Bokenkamp and Richard D’Ovidio, with Ryan Cruise, Melissa Glenn, Albert Kim, Akela Cooper, Kelly Johnson, and Glenn Kessler all working in the writer’s room. Sam Hargrave, famous for his work directing Chris Hemsworth’s Extraction movies, directed several episodes of The Last Frontier with John Curran and Dennie Gordon. Hargrave also produces the action series along with star Jason Clarke.

Will ‘The Last Frontier’ Get a Season 2?

Apple TV has yet to announce if The Last Frontier has been renewed for a second season, but this announcement is likely to come sometime in the next few weeks as the show wraps up its first season. It’s certainly produced the necessary numbers in the viewership department as one of the streamer’s most popular shows since its premiere, but the middling reception will be hard to ignore. Still, if creator Jon Bokenkamp finds an idea that works and Jason Clarke agrees to come back, it’s entirely possible that The Last Frontier could come back with another season in the next few years.
