NFL Films' Jeff Cameron recalls Patrick Mahomes' mic'd-up moment

This week, Chiefs Wire's Ed Easton Jr. spoke with NFL Films producer Jeff Cameron.

In his interview with Easton Jr., Cameron, a longtime NFL Films producer who directed HBO's new documentary 'The Shuffle' based on the 1985 Chicago Bears' iconic song and music video, discussed the short film. He also reflected on the memorable sound bites and footage from Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes during his 2022 battle with Las Vegas Raiders defensive lineman Maxx Crosby.

"The 40th anniversary of the '85 Bears and the 'Super Bowl Shuffle', once they hit our radar, we're always on the lookout for good, latching on points like that. A 40th anniversary, especially with something so sensational and so successful, like the shuffle." said Cameron, "It was certainly on our radar from from the get go, and then with this new series of short documentaries that we're producing in partnership with HBO, it just seemed ripe for that format, not quite long enough for a 90 minute feature, certainly not multi part, but a story that we could tell but also dive deeply into for about 40 minutes, really hyper focused on that unique point in time, that 12 week span from conception to the Super Bowl, really, interested us and I think it worked out."

One of Cameron's many production projects includes Netflix's 'Quarterback' and 'Receiver' docuseries. He recalled the moment between Mahomes and Crosby during the first season of 'Quarterback'.

"When a moment like that happens, you know you have something special in that moment in particular. I remember when it happened, of course, NFL films, we knew that (Patrick) Mahomes was mic'd up for the series at the time, but no one else did," said Cameron, "I remember people were trying to guess what he was saying. People threw in a voice for him, as if he were saying those things. It was just funny, sitting back for those four or five months, being like, we have the actual audio, and we're just very eager to show people that we had it and put it in the show. What an all-time moment."

'The Shuffle' is the first in a series of short documentaries being produced by HBO and NFL Films. It debuts November 25th at 8 pm CT on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max.
