Walt Disney Animation Studios has another new film out, finally releasing the highly anticipated sequel Zootopia 2. The return of Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde after the nine-year wait since Zootopia's release, means that the new movie is inherently targeting a slightly different generation of kids, and their parents.
Any child who saw Zootopia in theaters is now at least 10 years old, while younger fans of Nick and Judy may have come through the film streaming on Disney+. Now that the sequel has been released, children of all ages will want to see Zootopia 2 on streaming or in theaters, and it's up to parents to determine if they can.
Whether your child is still a toddler or a bit more grown up, you may want to know exactly what Zootopia 2 holds in terms of jokes, language, scary moments, and its themes before seeing it. Here's a complete parents' guide to Zootopia 2.
Zootopia 2 Is Rated PG
Nick and Judy in Zootopia 2
First of all, Zootopia 2 is officially rated PG by the MPA for "action/violence and rude humor." The PG rating, by definition, means parental guidance suggested, putting it a step above the G rating, which indicates it is appropriate for all ages.
The PG rating for Zootopia 2 is very common for major animated movies, especially from Disney. So if they've seen the studio's past releases, such as Moana 2 or even the original Zootopia, and were fine with its contents, the same should be true here.
There is a level of action/violence as Judy and Nick traverse across Zootopia that could be intense for the youngest of kids. Similarly, the mocking humor of Nick and other characters is what brings the "rude humor" designation.
How Appropriate Zootopia 2 Is For Kids
Nick Wilde, Gary De'Snake and Judy Hopps Falling In The Mountains In Zootopia 2
Generally speaking, I'd say that Zootopia 2 is very kid-friendly. It's got a strong message that any child can connect to and even learn from. There are plenty of great characters in Zootopia 2's cast and funny jokes to keep them entertained, and Shakira's latest song for the movie may even become a favorite of theirs.
In terms of specific language included in the film, there is no cursing. A pig does say, "What the pork" at one point, but younger viewers aren't likely to catch the clever wordplay. Some name-calling among the characters does happen, so words like "butthead," "idiot," and "dumb" are heard momentarily.
One element to keep in mind is that there are some potentially scary moments in Zootopia 2. The lynx villains are very intense, with even some pieces of animation designed to make them look more threatening. There are also two different jump scares involving villain characters that could terrify children.
There are even homages to The Silence of the Lambs and The Shining. Your kids might not get the classic movie references, but the imagery alone may be enough to make them want to hide behind their hands.
Ultimately, it's up to the parents to decide if their kid is of the right age to see or hear these different things. If they are, then Zootopia 2 is certainly worth checking out.
