Wednesday has already proved itself a runaway success for Netflix. Seasons 1 and 2 exploded in popularity, instantly elevating the creepy-clever Addams Family-adjacent drama to flagship status on the streamer. However, even with that meteoric rise, many hardcore fans of the source material have quietly wondered if it’s really the Addams Family they know and love?
On one hand, Wednesday works brilliantly as a supernatural teen drama. The gothic halls of Nevermore Academy provide ample room for mystery, adolescent angst, and eerie supernatural shenanigans. Yet when it comes to embracing the spirit of the original Addams Family, the show has often felt more like a loose homage than a true continuation.
Wednesday’s links to its source material have sometimes felt more cosmetic than essential. However, news from the development of season 3 in development reveals fans may finally get the deeper Addams Family connection they’ve been craving.
The recent Wednesday season 3 casting news that acclaimed actress Eva Green will join the show as Aunt Ophelia, one of Wednesday Addams’ (Jenna Ortega) most intriguing relatives, suggests that Netflix might be ready to lean harder into the Addams mythology than ever before. This is amazing news, and a sign that Netflix may be paying close attention to what fans actually want from the show.
Wednesday Season 3 Will Feature Another Addams Family Member
Eva Green Joins The Cast As Aunt Ophelia
Season 3 of Wednesday is turning up the gothic dial, with Eva Green joining the cast as Ophelia Frump, the long-lost sister of Morticia Addams (Catherine Zeta-Jones). Green’s casting was announced by Netflix’s Tudum blog, with showrunners Al Gough and Miles Millar describing her as "haunting, elegant, and beautifully unpredictable". In other words, perfectly suited to the eerie world of Wednesday.
Ophelia Frump has been a dark mystery hovering over the narrative for some time. According to the lore established in Wednesday, Ophelia was once a raven like Wednesday, gifted with psychic abilities. However, during her sophomore year at Nevermore Academy, Ophelia pushed those powers too far and suffered a psychotic break.
Her mother, Hester Frump (Joanna Lumley), had her committed to Willow Hill Psychiatric Hospital. Ophelia subsequently vanished from the family record. The character’s return is a big deal, both for Wednesday’s narrative and fans of the Addams Family.
In the Wednesday season 2 finale, Wednesday reads Ophelia’s long-lost journal, triggering a psychic vision that reveals Ophelia is alive and locked away in a creepy basement chamber at Grandmama’s mansion. She is shown writing “Wednesday must die” on a wall in what appears to be her own blood.
This reveal opens the door to massive narrative potential. Ophelia’s return threatens to shake the very foundations of the Addams family dynamic, and could force Wednesday (and Morticia) to confront generational trauma, dark secrets, and possibly the consequences of psychic power misused. With Eva Green’s trademark intensity, Aunt Ophelia could easily become one of the show’s most compelling (and haunting) new figures.
Bringing in an Addams Family character like Ophelia signals a shift. After flirting with the Addams mythology in earlier seasons, Wednesday season 3 might finally ground itself more firmly in the gothic lineage fans expect. Ophelia is a character with real history and baggage, and now she has a face to go with her mystery.
Wednesday Needs A Lot More Addams Family
The Netflix Show Still Feels Too Loosely Connected To The Addams Legacy

Even though Wednesday has been a breakout hit, it has often felt more like a gothic teen mystery drama than a true continuation of the Addams Family legacy. The supernatural teen-drama elements are engaging, but the core Addams identity has sometimes been largely aesthetic.
Nevermore Academy offers a richly imagined world, but its halls feel disconnected from the twisted, morbid charm that defined the original Addams Family. The show has given us Morticia, Gomez, Pugsley, Grandmama, and even Uncle Fester, sure. However, the tone rarely sinks its teeth into the weirdness and dark familial dysfunction that made the Addams Family into something truly unique.
The characters sometimes behave more like archetypal supernatural-thriller figures than members of a deeply dysfunctional, eccentric family. Wednesday season 2 made strides: the Addams parents and Pugsley had expanded roles, and the show explored family dynamics more directly. Still, by the end, many fans felt the Addams banter, twisted morality, and quirky hallmarks of what made the original mythology so beloved were still missing.
The fact that Ophelia was only briefly teased, and then only revealed in a shadowy vision, speaks volumes. She wasn’t woven into the core story of Nevermore or the supernatural plots. Instead, she served as a dangling thread, hinting at but never delivering on a deeper Addams Family connection.
That changes with Eva Green’s casting. Her role promises to bring a much bigger slice of Addams lore into the heart of Wednesday. However, even with this promising development, the show will need to do more than just name-drop Addams Family members. It needs to lean into the weird, macabre, familial messiness and explore the emotional and psychological baggage that comes with being an Addams.
Ophelia’s return could be the catalyst. If handled with care, her presence could force the rest of the family, especially Wednesday and Morticia, to reconcile with secrets, guilt, and legacy in a way the show has largely avoided so far. That’s the level of commitment to Addams Family identity Wednesday needs if it truly wants to honor its roots.

Ophelia writes Wednesday Must Die in blood on the wall in Wednesday season 2 part 2
The casting of Eva Green as Aunt Ophelia injects a new surge of excitement for Wednesday season 3. Green’s history of bringing gothic intensity and unpredictable energy to her roles makes her ideal for a character built on psychic power, family secrets, and ominous re-emergence. Her arrival suggests that Wednesday’s creators are finally ready to deepen the show’s Addams Family roots rather than just skim the surface.
Beyond Ophelia, Wednesday season 2’s finale left several narrative threads dangling, enough to power a storm of potential storylines. Wednesday’s psychic powers may be returning after years of being dormant. The show also teased a renewed bond between Wednesday and Morticia. Plus, the mysteries surrounding Enid Sinclair (Emma Myers), her werewolf transformation, and the shifting power dynamics among other Outcasts all set the stage for chaos.
Ophelia’s locked-away imprisonment, and her ominous message “Wednesday must die” scrawled in blood, guarantee that the season will carry stakes that go beyond a typical supernatural mystery. The threat is personal, familial, and existential. For Wednesday Addams, this could mean confronting parts of her past and family history she never suspected existed. For the show, it could mean transforming from a creepy-cool teen drama into a true Addams Family saga.
With Eva Green on board, Wednesday has an opportunity to deliver dark introspection, twisted family dynamics, and the kind of melancholic, macabre tone that made the Addams Family legendary. If the writers lean into that fully by embracing the weird, the uncomfortable, the beautifully twisted, Wednesday season 3 could bring the kind of Addams essence many fans have been waiting for.
