After nearly three decades of shaping one of the most iconic heroes in fiction, Jack Reacher's creator Lee Child has confirmed he’s officially stepping away from the blockbuster franchise — books, branding, and all. With the Child brothers’ new novel Exit Strategy marking the 30th entry in the series, Lee says the handoff to his younger brother Andrew Child is now complete. “It’s all his now,” Lee declared, signaling the end of an era and the beginning of a fully new chapter for Jack Reacher.
The announcement raises major questions for fans of the hit Prime Video series starring Alan Ritchson, which is heading into its fourth season. But for Lee, this moment has been years in the making. For most of his career, Lee Child’s name was the only one on the cover — big, bold, and growing larger with each bestseller. That changed in 2020, when Andrew was the co-author on The Sentinel, which began a slow but deliberate transition into Lee’s retirement. To prepare for the big day, Andrew had been reading Lee’s manuscripts since the very beginning and jokingly refers to himself as the “original Reacher fan,” a third brother to the character they both helped bring to live. Now in his seventies, Lee feels like the handover is overdue: My entire ambition was to give the character away,” he says. With Exit Strategy now released, both brothers agree: this is “classic Reacher,” but it’s Andrew’s second fully solo outing.
How Was Jack Reacher Created?
Reacher was born out of a detour. After Lee was abruptly fired from his television job in the ’90s, he turned to writing as a last-ditch effort to support his family. That gamble paid off when Killing Floor hit shelves in 1997. But success didn’t come instantly — Andrew remembers worrying as his older brother faced unemployment and reinvented himself from scratch.
Once Reacher became a phenomenon, the character stopped belonging solely to Lee. Readers claimed ownership, knowing Reacher’s instincts as well as the author himself. So when Andrew was brought in to help update the character — updating outmoded habits, sharpening dialogue, smoothing anachronisms — fans braced for change, but the brothers insist the transition was slow, deliberate, and in the best interest of the franchise. After all, this is a character who used to use payphones and pagers.
“What we want,” Andrew says, “is for people to go to the bookstore to buy the new Reacher, not the new Child.”
And for Lee, he wants the readers to always feel the same way he does about Jack Reacher.
“It’s like settling down once a year with a really good friend,” Lee says, “and just chatting for a couple of days.”
Andrew, meanwhile, has embraced the responsibility of carrying that friend forward — refining Reacher while keeping him unmistakably himself.
Reacher can be streamed on Prime Video.
