Bayer Leverkusen coach Kasper Hjulmand said that his team took lessons from games against Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich, which helped them defeat Manchester City 2-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday.

"We learned from the games against Paris and Bayern, where we were too passive," Hjulmand said after the game.

Leverkusen were thrashed 7-2 by PSG last month in the Champions League and just a few weeks later suffered a 3-0 defeat to Bayern in the Bundesliga.

But after the win against City, thanks to goals from Alejandro Grimaldo and Patrik Schick, Hjulmand said that his team has a lot of potential.

"I just told the lads that I'm very proud of them. This team has so much potential, such great character. It's a night we'll remember for a long time."

Goalscorer Patrik Schick added: "The plan worked: we were compact at the back and very effective in front of goal. We fought until the last minute and are very happy about these three points."

Ahead of Wednesday's matches, Leverkusen are 13th in the Champions League standings, which would secure them a spot in the play-offs for the knock-out stages.
