By Jasmine LawsShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberThe U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has proposed withdrawing a rule that would have ensured certain cosmetics were tested for asbestos.
The rule was mandated under the 2022 Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act, requiring the FDA to implement methods of detecting and identifying the harmful carcinogenic chemical in talc-containing cosmetics.
Talc, also known as talcum powder, is widely used in cosmetics for its moisture-absorbing properties, however the mineral can be contaminated with asbestos, and historically a link was found between use of talc and ovarian cancer, according to the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
