Fans are starting to flood back into theaters over the past weekends at the box office, following one of the worst fall showings in decades. Universal's Wicked: For Good helped breathe life back into theaters this past weekend with $147 million, behind Warner Bros.' A Minecraft Movie ($162.7 million) for the second-biggest debut of the year.
It was only the fifth nine-figure debut of the year, along with Warner Bros.' Superman ($125 million) and Disney's The Fantastic Four: First Steps ($117.6 million), though this weekend will bring the sixth. Disney's Zootopia 2 — hitting theaters nearly a decade after the original 2016 Zootopia — is riding a wave of strong reviews into theaters for the Thanksgiving weekend.
While it won't break the three day ($139.7 million) or five-day Thanksgiving record ($225.4 million) — both currently held by Moana 2 - Zootopia 2 will still put up quite the strong showing and easily win the extended holiday weekend, facing very little competition. A24's Eternity, starring Elizabeth Olsen and Miles Teller, is the only other movie opening wide.
We're predicting that Zootopia 2 will run roughshod over the minimal competition, earning $94.6 million over the three-day frame and $123.8 million over the five-day extended weekend.
Zootopia 2 Will Open Huge Nearly A Decade After The Original

The original Zootopia was quite the surprise hit for Disney. Armed with a near-perfect 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Zootopia opened to a decent $75 million in early March 2016. Much to many people's surprise, fans kept flooding back into theaters, with the animated hit taking the top spot at the box office for three weekends in a row.
While most big-budget studio movies typically drop 50% or more in their seconds weekends, Zootopia didn't post a 50% drop until its 13th frame in theaters, going on to gross $341.2 million domestic and $1.023 million worldwide. A sequel was inevitable, though its arrival nearly a decade later had some wondering if the property was still viable.
Box office forecasters Cinelytic called Zootopia 2 one of the four movies that will drive the fourth-quarter box office, projecting that it will overperform from its predecessor. Their AI-driven models put the animated sequel at $440 million at the domestic box office, nearly $100 million more than the original film, which could very well dominate the field in coming weeks.
Stars Jason Bateman and Ginnifer Goodwin return as Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps in the animated sequel, with beloved Oscar-winning actor Ke Huy Quan lending his voice to the mysterious pit viper Gary De'Snake, whose presence disrupts the city since no reptiles are allowed in all of Zootopia.
Other returning voice cast members are Idris Elba (Chief Bogo), Jenny Slate (Dawn Bellwether), Shakira (Gazelle), Josh Dallas (Frantic Pig), Nate Torrence (Benjamin Clawhauser), Alan Tudyk (Duke Weasleton) and Bonnie Hunt (Bonnie Hopps, Judy's mother). More new additions to the voice cast include Andy Smaberg (Pawbert Lynxley), David Strathairn (Milton Linxley), Jean Reno (Bucheron), and Ed Sheeran (Ed Sheerin).
Zootopia 2 will easily take the three-day weekend ($94.6 million) and the extended five-day weekend ($123.8 million) crowns, with Wicked: For Good falling not too far behind, taking advantage of the holiday. The musical will drop to second place with $81.6 million for the three-day tally and $106.4 million for the five-day haul.
Eternity And the Holdovers All Fight For Box Office Scraps

While Zootopia 2 is expected to open in more than 4,000 theaters, the only other wide release this weekend - A24's Eternity - is only expected to debut in roughly 1,500 theaters over the holiday. The romantic comedy starring Elizabeth Olsen, Miles Teller and Callum Turner is coming off strong reviews, currently holding a 79% rating from Rotten Tomatoes critics.
There will be a severe drop-off behind Zootopia 2 and Wicked: For Good, with the rest of the top 10 all in seven-digit territory, with the final entries likely in six-digit territory as well. Eternity will bow in third place with $6.2 million, followed by last weekend's second place finisher, Lionsgate's Now You See Me: Now You Don't.
That magical sequel will drop to fourth place with $4.8 million in its third frame in theaters, with Disney's Predator: Badlands rounding out the top 5 with $4.1 million in its fourth weekend. Paramount's The Running Man - which suffered a disastrous 65.3% second-frame drop last weekend - will drop again to $2.7 million, leveling off slightly.
The top 10 will be rounded out by Rental Family in seventh place ($1.8 million), followed by Sisu: Road to Revenge ($1.6 million), Regretting You ($985,000), and Nuremberg ($768,000). While it won't crack the top 10 this weekend, Oscar contender Hamnet will open in roughly 100 theaters this weekend, and may very well make a splash in limited release.
Hamnet will open with its platform release on Wednesday, before expanding into a wide release on December 12, though it's unclear how wide a release it will be getting. Take a look at our projected three-day tallies for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend below.
