Following 2000’s Pitch Black and 2004’s The Chronicles of Riddick, Vin Diesel returned to the sci-fi action franchise that pre-dates his Fast & Furious work, starring as Richard B. Riddick in 2013’s straightforwardly titled Riddick. Back in the role that shot him into the mainstream, Vin Diesel starred in Riddick alongside the likes of Matt Nable, Katee Sackhoff of The Mandalorian fame, and his future Guardians of the Galaxy co-star, Dave Bautista.
Now, as a fourth film in the franchise, reportedly titled Riddick: Furya, continues its stint in development hell, 2013's Riddick has become a surprise streaming hit. At the time of writing, Riddick is one of the ten most-watched movies on free streamer Tubi, joining the likes of Jack the Giant Slayer, the gangster classic The Godfather, Martin Scorsese's Casino, and the hilarious festive flick Jingle All the Way on the list. The most-watched title on the streamer right now is 2004's The Punisher, which starred Thomas Jane as the antihero Frank Castle. "Left for dead on a sun-scorched planet, fugitive Riddick (Vin Diesel) fights for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he has yet encountered. His only hope for escape is to activate an emergency beacon, but that brings with it a different problem: mercenaries. The first ship carries an especially violent and lethal group; the second is led by a man from Riddick's past. With time running out, Riddick realizes that neither group will leave without his head as trophy."
'Riddick' Received Mixed Reviews
With the previous entry in the franchise facing serious critical backlash, there wasn't much hope heading into Riddick's 2013 box office run. However, although the movie received mixed results from critics and audiences, most agreed it was a stark improvement on what had come before. On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the movie boasts middling scores of 58% and 56% from critics and audiences, respectively. The consensus on the site reads, "It may not win the franchise many new converts, but this back-to-basics outing brings Riddick fans more of the brooding sci-fi action they've come to expect."
