One of the most exciting parts of any new Marvel Cinematic Universe release is the chance to see new characters paired up and interacting. This has especially been true with the Avengers films, which not only gave us Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man together for the first time, but also eventually paired Thor and Rocket Raccoon, Iron Man and Nebula, and more.
Avengers: Doomsday will take this concept even farther. By bringing in MCU veterans, multiversal variants of the Fox X-Men franchise, and Doctor Doom, the movie is sure to bring several major Marvel characters together on the big screen for the very first time. A few very exciting ones have already been confirmed, too.
5 Beast & Doctor Doom
Kelsey Grammer's Hank McCoy aka Beast talks while wearing a labcoat in The Marvels' post-credits scene
Kelsey Grammer is returning as Beast in Avengers: Doomsday, reprising the role he originally played in Fox's X-Men: The Last Stand. However, he's playing the version of the brilliant, completely CGI, blue mutant introduced in The Marvels' post-credits.
The actor has spilled the beans that he'll share the screen with Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, he confirmed that he's a big fan of RDJ and that "We… sort of share a scene. I don’t wanna go too into that. I don’t know what I can say or not say."
While Grammer stopped short of revealing the length of Beast and Doom's interaction, this will be the first time these major Marvel characters have crossed over on the big screen. Beast has only been in X-Men movies before Doomsday, while Doom has only ever appeared in Fantastic Four films.
Considering the genius and strength of both characters, it will be exciting to see exactly how they interact in Doomsday.
4 Reed Richards & Beast
Pedro Pascal's Reed Richards looking sad and injured in The Fantastic Four: First Steps
Pedro Pascal is returning as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic in Doomsday, too. The Fantastic Four: First Steps set up the team to play key roles in the upcoming MCU movie, and that is especially true for Reed after Doom kidnapped his and Sue's son, Franklin Richards.
At some point in the movie, Reed will meet Beast. Grammer confirmed this as well in the aforementioned interview, saying, "I really had a great time with the new guy from Fantastic Four. Pedro, wonderful guy. I really, really enjoyed hanging out with him, and we worked together."
The Beast actor may have again stopped short of fully revealing details of specific scenes in Doomsday, but he has confirmed that two of Marvel's smartest characters will unite on the screen. Hopefully, the on-screen rapport between them is as lovely as the time Grammer seemed to have with Pascal.
3 Thor & Beast
Chris Hemsworth's Thor looking confused in Thor: Love and Thunder
Audiences will also see Chris Hemsworth's Thor back. The lone member of the original Avengers team confirmed for Doomsday, the god of thunder will have a major role to play, reportedly even being considered as the second lead, behind only RDJ's Doom.
His journey will include meeting Beast, as Grammer affirmed in the same interview. When asked who he was most geeked out to interact with, he succinctly said, "You know, Thor," before moving on to talk about RDJ. That simple response is all that's needed to confirm that Beast and Thor will share the screen.
Since they've so far existed in mostly different Marvel franchises, there has been no chance for them to interact previously.
The question is how this one will come about. Thor and the Avengers could see Beast and the X-Men as enemies, leading to a potential fight between the two mighty heroes as part of an all-out superteam battle. Then again, they will also likely become allies against Doom, potentially providing some fun interplay between the god of thunder and another hairy genius.
2 Nightcrawler & Reed Richards
x-men's nightcrawler
There's also evidence that Reed will interact with another X-Men member. Alan Cumming is reprising his role as Nightcrawler, whom he played originally in X2 over 20 years ago.
After filming on Doomsday began, Cumming told BuzzFeedUK about his experience so far. His quote revealed Nightcrawler and Reed fight: "I’m sort of learning these fights and I’m like, 'What, who am I fighting with?’ [They’re like,] 'You’re hitting Pedro Pascal against the head.'"
Cumming and Pascal have since attempted to walk back this reveal. Cumming hosted Jimmy Kimmel Live when the First Steps cast were guests, and he said, "I said a thing about us fighting, but cub’s honor, have you done what I said? Have you been in a fight with me in this film, Pedro?" Pascal then said, "Alan and I have never had a fight."
Whether they fight or not, it seems clear that they do interact on screen. Grammer confirming Beast also shares scenes with Fantastic Four's leader suggests there's a lot more going on here too. Viewers will likely get to see Nightcrawler, Beast, and the other X-Men among Doomsday's cast members meet Reed's entire team.
1 Gambit & Doctor Doom
Channing Tatum as Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine
Channing Tatum is back as Gambit for Doomsday, too. After failing to get a solo film under 20th Century Fox's leadership, his cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine turned him into a fan-favorite. Just about any character he interacts with will be a first for Marvel movies.
Tatum has confirmed that one highly anticipated interaction will come when Gambit fights Doom. The actor said he had filmed a "big fight" involving RDJ's villain. Surely, Gambit is not taking on Doom by himself, suggesting that this scene could be a chance for him to share the screen with many other Marvel heroes, possibly even for the first time.
Ironically, his lack of screentime previously means even Gambit's interactions with other key X-Men will be cinematic history. Those interactions will be just as great to see as Avengers: Doomsday pairs its cast together for new, fun combinations.
