Taylor Sheridan's controversial oil drama is back for a new season. Landman has aired two episodes so far, and while the first season was met with overwhelming acclaim, the second is losing people rapidly. Critics rated Landman Season 2 fresh at 81% when it premiered. In the week between the season premiere and the second episode, that score has fallen to 77%, making it the lowest-rated season of the Billy Bob Thornton-led drama.
On the bright side, the show seems to be winning back viewers slowly after they overwhelmingly rejected the series premiere, rating it at 36% on the same site. The audience score is on a steady incline, with the season currently sitting at 40%. Still, this is a far cry from the first season, which currently boasts a 64% audience score. Season 2's underwhelming response has pulled the overall series audience score to 53%.
An overwhelming observation among viewers is that the season feels static, with the same old characters who have not developed in the interim or even throughout the first season. Angela (Ali Larter) and Ainsley (Michelle Randolph) continue to be on the receiving end of this ire. Still, when Collider's Jeff Ewing reviewed the season, he noted that the stagnation is uniform across all the main characters. He wrote:
"One of the biggest issues with Landman is that events happen, circumstances change, but characters largely don't. Thornton embodies his role well, but Tommy's a capable relic, dragging his feet any time something might alter his course. His ex-wife Angela is an interesting source of positivity and intensity — and Larter is regularly solid and always watchable in the role — but changes relatively little, while daughter Ainsley doesn't meaningfully evolve at all."
'Landman' Might Win Viewers Over as the Season Progresses
There is still potential for the show to turn things around, given that critics were given three episodes for review ahead of the season launch. The ten-episode season might have something up its sleeve in the remaining episodes, something Larter teased in an interview. It all connects to the newest character, T.L. (Sam Elliott), who offers a fresh perspective on the two unpopular characters. “You can see in the way he looks at us that he sees the joy in our characters. The audience gets to see us through his eyes, and it's so special," Larter said.
In next week's episode, Tommy's losing control. His son Cooper (Jacob Lofland) is involved with some nasty people who make their presence known after Cooper's success, and Cammi (Demi Moore) continues to unravel in the face of her loss and new responsibilities. Landman Season 2, Episode 3, "Almost Home," streams on Paramount+ on Sunday, November 30.
