Christopher Nolan has given so much to the world through film for the better part of the last 30 years. Many would argue that his most famous work is The Dark Knight trilogy, starring Christian Bale and Gary Oldman. Nolan made three all-time great comic book movies before the genre blew up into what it is today. Fans have also proclaimed Nolan one of the kings of sci-fi with his works on other massive hits like Inception and Interstellar. The former is a mind-bending thriller co-starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy, and the latter is an intense space epic featuring Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway. Nolan has also directed period pieces like The Prestige (Hugh Jackman), and it’s clear from one look at his filmography that there isn’t anything he can’t do.
Three years ago, Nolan released what felt like his magnum opus at the time with Oppenheimer. The WWII film is more of a drama than an action thriller, and it tells the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the man who invented the nuclear bomb and changed the world forever. Nolan recruited Cillian Murphy for the lead role in Oppenheimer, and he gave such a forceful performance that it was worthy of his first Academy Award. Oppenheimer also helped Robert Downey Jr. win his first Oscar, and the film also won Nolan awards for Best Picture and Best Director. Oppenheimer is not currently streaming anywhere in America at the time of writing, but the film has become one of the most popular rentals and purchases on VOD platforms like Apple TV in several countries. It’s available to rent for only a few dollars.
Christopher Nolan’s Next Movie May Be His Biggest
It looked like Christopher Nolan couldn’t top his work on Oppenheimer, but he’s poised to do just that with The Odyssey later this year. Nolan has recruited Oppenheimer veteran Matt Damon to star in the lead role of Odysseus in the film, and budding star/Spider-Man veteran Tom Holland will play his son, Telemachus. The film also features a host of other stars, including Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Zendaya, and more, and is scheduled for release on July 17. The film may just be Nolan’s first $1 billion movie since The Dark Knight Rises.
