Warning: Spoilers ahead for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1!A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 is officially confirmed, and we already have an idea of what to expect with the return of HBO's Game of Thrones prequel. The first season was based on George R.R. Martin's The Hedge Knight novella, with Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell leading A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' cast as Dunk and Egg, respectively.
After losing his mentor, Dunk, aka Duncan the Tall, heads to Ashford in the hopes of being in the tournament. On his journey, he encounters Egg, who requests to be his squire. While there, both Dunk and Egg find themselves in some serious trouble, with Dunk imprisoned after fighting with Aerion Targaryen and Egg revealing his hidden identity as Aerion's brother, Aegon Targaryen.
The conflict results in a trial by combat, specifically, the trial of seven between knights fighting for Dunk or Aerion. Baelor Targaryen is killed from the trial by seven, but Dunk is eventually set free by the Targaryens. By the end of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1, Egg leaves with Dunk to continue serving as Dunk's squire, and they set off for another adventure.
A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms Has Been Renewed For Season 2 By HBO

HBO officially announced A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2's renewal in November 2025, a few weeks before the series made its debut on January 18, 2026. The decision immediately paid off, considering the stellar reception surrounding the prequel spinoff, especially when it comes to Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell's performances.
It's clear that viewers can't get enough of Dunk and Egg, with the series appealing to Game of Thrones fans as well as franchise newcomers. Not only was A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms one of HBO's biggest premieres, but the show has garnered an average of 13 million viewers per episode, according to Variety.
Filming For A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms Season 2 Began In December 2025
Like the case with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' early renewal announcement, the show wasted no time jumping into season 2's production. In fact, filming for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 started in December 2025, meaning production on the follow-up season was well underway before the show had its premiere.
Filming for season 2 is taking place in Belfast, which is where the first season was filmed in 2024. Based on the production timeline and shorter season compared to past Game of Thrones shows, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 is expected to release in 2027 in an attempt to follow an annual release strategy.
A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms Season 2 Will Adapt GRRM's The Sworn Sword
Whereas season 1 was based on The Hedge Knight novella, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 will adapt George R.R. Martin's The Sworn Sword. First published in 2003, the story follows Dunk and Egg in the Reach, where they assist an old knight, Eustace Osgrey of Standfast, during a property dispute.
While Maekar initially accepts the idea of Egg serving as Dunk's squire by the end of season 1, he isn't on board with his son traveling around Westeros the way Arlan of Pennytree mentored Dunk. Granted, Egg makes his own choice and tells Dunk that his father now supports the arrangement. Based on the next novella's timeline, season 2 will take place about a year after Dunk and Egg leave Ashford.
The Sworn Sword will also delve deeper into the history of the Blackfyre Rebellion and how the outcome of those events has affected different parts of Westeros. Interestingly, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 will feature Dorne, a key location in the Game of Thrones universe, as well as Winterfell.

Of course, there couldn't be another season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms without Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell. Aside from their returns, there have been no announcements confirming A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2's cast.
Granted, there have been plenty of rumors surrounding who is joining the show's cast for the second season, including the belief that Henry Cavill is set to portray Daemon Blackfyre. However, Claffey has clarified Cavill's A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms casting rumors, calling the rumor a "complete misunderstanding."

While ambitious, Game of Thrones fans are curious when it comes to Dunk and Egg's adult fates, especially knowing that Egg goes on to become a king.
Whether A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms sticks around for the long term remains to be seen, but it's at least safe to assume season 3 will be greenlit to adapt The Mystery Knight, the third novella published as part of GRRM's Tales of Dunk & Egg collection.
