Florida's FHSAA boys basketball regional championships tipped off Saturday with all five teams listed among the Sporting News Top 50 advancing to next weekend's region semifinals.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThat includes the nation's No. 6 Calvary Christian Academy [Fort Lauderdale, FL] Eagles who walloped the Bishop Verot [Fort Myers, FL] Vikings, 78-22, on Saturday and will face the Cardinal Newman [West Palm Beach, FL] Crusaders next Saturday in the Class 3A region semifinals.
Other national Top 50 victors in Saturday's quarterfinals include two more members of Florida's Class 3A ranks – the Andrew Jackson [Jacksonville, FL] Tigers and the Lake Highland Prep [Orlando, FL] Highlanders. Both of those schools also won in lopsided fashion with Andrew Jackson romping past the Marianna [FL] Bulldogs, 94-41, and Lake Highland Prep routing the Astronaut [Titusville, FL] War Eagles, 69-23.
The Columbus [Miami, FL] Explorers and the St. Thomas Aquinas [Fort Lauderdale, FL] Raiders both advanced to keep their state title hopes alive as well. The Explorers compete in the FHSAA's Class 7A ranks, and for the second week in a row, they ran roughshod over the Doral [FL] Academy Firebirds. The Raiders, meanwhile, are pursuing the Sunshine State's Class 6A title, and they handled the Mater Academy Charter [Hialeah Gardens, FL] Lions with ease in a 72-50 win.
