Tre Johnson spent nine seasons in the NFL, eight with the Washington Redskins. On Sunday, the 54-year-old Johnson passed away. Johnson's wife, Irene, revealed the news on her Facebook account.

"It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that my husband, Tre’ Johnson, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly ... during a brief family trip," Irene Johnson wrote. "His four children, Chloe, EJ, EZ and Eden, extended family, friends, and I are devastated and in shock."

Johnson was a second-round pick out of Temple in the 1994 NFL Draft. It was Norv Turner's first year as head coach and also the same draft that produced quarterbacks Heath Shuler and Gus Frerotte. That same draft also produced guard Joe Patton, who sadly passed away in 2022.

Johnson played in 14 games as a rookie, starting one. He moved into the starting lineup in 1995 and over the next six seasons started 65 games. He was a staple along the offensive line during those years, earning a Pro Bowl earth and second-team All-Pro in 1999.

Johnson was injured in 2000 and was limited to only four games. He signed with the Cleveland Browns in 2001 and played in only four games. In 2002, he returned to Washington, where he appeared in 10 games in what would be his final NFL season.

After his playing career ended, Johnson started a second career as a history teacher at the Landon School in Bethesda, Maryland. Johnson was a beloved teacher. In her Facebook post, Johnson's wife said he recently had to take a leave of absence from his teaching career due to health issues.

The Washington Commanders remembered Johnson on social media.

This is unfortunately the third death in over a week for the Washington NFL family, following Sonny Jurgensen and Barry Wilburn.

Here's a great story about Johnson from Liz Clarke, showing the impact he had on the children he taught.
