Estate agent Matt Cavender took some time out from arranging property deals this week to talk to Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch.

The Tory party leader visited the new Godalming branch of Cavender’s in Surrey on Monday morning with former Chancellor and local MP Jeremy Hunt.

They were joined by Shadow Business Secretary Andrew Griffith in what was a high-powered delegation visiting various high street businesses.

Cavender, who is Director at Cavender, told The Neg after the visit: “It was an office full of media, so it was quite daunting.”

But he had the opportunity to tell Badenoch that agents would support the scrapping of Stamp Duty, which was a flagship Tory policy.

He also told her he was opposed to the Renters’ Rights Act as it would have a detrimental impact on the rental market.

In a clip of the visit recorded by ITN, Badenoch can be heard saying: “I’m trying to show the benefits of removing some of these taxes.”

And she said she was opposed to the Conservatives’ Renters (Reform) Bill, which was the forerunner to the Renters’ Rights Act under the Labour government.

Hunt reported on his Facebook page: “At Cavender Estate Agents, Matt gave real insight into the local housing market, especially the knock-on effects of the Renters Reform Bill, which has led to large numbers of landlords selling up.”
