HUDSON – The Hudson Tigers took the first major step in their quest for a fifth straight Division 4 Michigan High School Athletic Association state wrestling championship Wednesday, Feb. 11, claiming the District 216 championship with a dominant 75-4 win over Sand Creek.
The district finals kicked off at 120 pounds, which saw Hudson’s Liam McClain defeat Sand Creek’s Nick Trame via an 11-1 major decision, giving the Tigers the early 4-0 lead.
Sand Creek quickly tied things up at 126 pounds as Aggie grappler Wyatt Fox defeated Hudson’s Jace Kimling via an 11-2 major decision, tying up the district finale at 4-4.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementHudson took control after the first two matches, winning the next 12 bouts, all via bonus points.
The run began at 132 pounds where Hudson’s Ethan Rising secured a void, followed by three-time defending state champion Nicholas Sorrow defeating Sand Creek’s Thomas Shanks via pin fall in 58 seconds at 138 pounds.
At 144 it was Colt Perry securing a 17-2 Tech Fall over AJ Murdico of Sand Creek, followed by Lucian Hepker of Hudson securing a win via pin fall over Eli Shirley in 3:25 at 150 pounds.

At 157 pounds it was Hudson’s Wyatt Kimble making quick work of Sand Creek’s Parker Foltz, securing the win via fall in 52 seconds. Up next was the defending 144-pound state champion Beckett Campbell who toed the line at 165 pounds versus Sand Creek’s Finley Thompson, a match Campbell secured via pin fall in 43 seconds.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementAfter Hudson’s Owen Loop accepted a void at 175 pounds it was Hudson’s Devon Brigman taking down Sand Creek’s Noah Walters via pin fall in 2:27 at 190 pounds, followed quickly by a pin fall win for Zachariah Linton of Hudson over Luke Schamberger of Sand Creek in 56 seconds at 215 pounds.
To finish out the district championship it was Hudson’s Malachi Marshall who secured a win at 285 pounds over Sand Creek’s Tucker Hulett via disqualification, followed by a win via void at 106 for Jaxton Kimling and a win by pin fall for Hudson’s Royce Beal over Nathan Bennett of Sand Creek in 1:46 at 113 pounds, finding the final score of 75-4.
Hudson will continue their quest for a fifth straight state title on Feb. 18 in the MHSAA Division 4 Regional 129 semifinals at a time and place yet to be determined.
