Crash & Burn: Seton Hall 70, Marquette 58

The Golden Eagles looked fine until the Pirates shut them down like a faucet in the second half.

Marquette women’s basketball led Seton Hall 23-17 at the end of the first quarter on Wednesday night at the McGuire Center.

Marquette women’s basketball led Seton Hall 40-36 at halftime.

A Skylar Forbes layup with 6:31 left in the third quarter gave Marquette a 49-42 lead over Seton Hall, their largest lead of the game.

Not to that point, of the game.

After that point, for the final 16:31 of the game, Marquette made three field goals. They missed their last 10 shots of the third quarter as the Pirates went on a 12-0 run to end the frame and take a 54-49 lead. Marquette then made three of their first four shots of the fourth quarter, and Charia Smith’s layup with 7:17 to go made it 61-56 Seton Hall. You will notice that these three baskets by Marquette did not alter Seton Hall’s five point lead from the start of the period and about three minutes had gone by.

Marquette didn’t attempt another field goal until three minutes had gone by. In the final 4:30 of the game, Marquette attempted nine field goals and missed all nine of them. Marquette’s only points in the final 7:17 of the game were two free throws from Skylar Forbes who played 32 minutes off the bench and led Marquette in scoring with 17 points on 6-for-12 shooting. I ask you: What is the point of bringing Forbes off the bench if she is going to play 80% of the minutes? What’s going on here?

Heck, “What’s going on here?” is a apt question for the entirety of the last nine games — nearly half the Big East schedule! — for Marquette. Just one controller-got-unplugged moment after another since the Golden Eagles ripped Villanova and Creighton in half in back-to-back games in early January, and now they’re 10-6 in the conference after starting 5-2 with one of the losses coming on the road against UConn. In this case, it was just poor shooting that doomed the Golden Eagles as they had just 11 turnovers, and that came in a game when Seton Hall — 40% from the field, no field goals in the final 3:43 — was no great shakes either.

Oh, hey, by the way: UConn’s coming to Milwaukee on Saturday, effectively schedule the Golden Eagles for a third straight loss, and unless they REALLY figure something out over the next 10 days, that’s going to very quickly turn into four straight losses.

Up Next: That game against #1 UConn is set to start at Noon Central time on Valentine’s Day, and FS1 will have the broadcast. The Huskies are a perfect 26-0 this season after outscoring Creighton 75-30 in the final three quarters of a 94-44 victory in Storrs on Wednesday night.
