It's the biggest television event of the year: the Super Bowl.

Every February, millions of people tune in to watch the deciding game for the Lombardi Trophy. Since the first Super Bowl in 1966, at least 24 million viewers have tuned in to watch the NFL title game.

The numbers have fluctuated but generally increased year-over-year in the decades since that first title game between the Green Bay Packers and Kansas City Chiefs.

Though it'll take some time to know for certain how many people are watching Super Bowl 60 between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots, we have a good idea from prior title games.

Here's what we know:

How many people watch the Super Bowl?

Using Super Bowl ratings from Nielsen Media Research, it's likely be more than 125 million people across all platforms. Nielsen estimated 127.7 million viewers watched Super Bowl 59 between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs last year. That marked the largest audience for a Super Bowl ever.

That continued a general upward trend from the last five years. Here's the Nielsen numbers from the last five Super Bowls:

  • Super Bowl 59: 127.7 million

  • Super Bowl 58: 123.7 million

  • Super Bowl 57: 115.1 million

  • Super Bowl 56: 112.3 million

  • Super Bowl 55: 101.6 million

Super Bowl 59 broke the previous record held by Super Bowl 51 which was 126.3 million total viewers.
