At this stage, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie bears a stronger resemblance to a completely different game in the franchise than the entry into the franchise it borrows its name from. As its title implies, the sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie will take inspiration from the 2007 Wii classic, Super Mario Galaxy, which famously took Mario on a cosmic adventure, where he met Rosalina.
The first trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie met the expectations set by the title, formally introducing Rosalina and teasing the main characters' exploits in outer space. Oddly enough, the second trailer moved in another direction, so much that when viewed by itself, it's not even obvious that Mario and Luigi are headed for the stars to team up with Rosalina and battle Bowser Jr.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie May Be Adapting Super Mario Odyssey Too
The second trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is clearly channeling the 2017 Nintendo Switch game, Super Mario Odyssey. The the place where Mario and Luigi find Yoshi's egg can be identified as the Sand Kingdom, the desert locale of Super Mario Odyssey. And the tyrannosaurus rex from the end of the trailer is also from Odyssey, specifically the Cascade Kingdom.
Notably, there's more Easter eggs in Odyssey and Mario games in the second Super Mario Galaxy Movie trailer than there are connections to Super Mario Galaxy. There are no Lumas, sightings of other planets, or any of the cosmic concepts present in the levels that Mario explored in the 2017 game.
Instead, what's previewed is a much more traditional Mario adventure, with Cheeps Cheeps, a Lakitu, and surroundings reminiscent of games like Super Mario World and Super Mario Bros. 2. What this blend of Mario games in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie suggests is a world-hopping story akin to The Super Mario Odyssey, which took Mario to 14 different kingdoms.
Similar to how the adventure plays out in The Super Mario Odyssey, Mario and his friends may have to venture through over a dozen worlds, some inspired by past games and others by the cosmic settings of Super Mario Galaxy and possibly Super Mario Galaxy 2.

That may not necessarily be a mistake, considering that Odyssey used several new and existing concepts as the basis for 14 incredible, fully-realized worlds.
