It is as if we haven't learned that when we question Eddie Howe, he will provide answers. Is it too early to say that our season is turning around? Absolutely. It's one league game won well at home.

Am I going to say it anyway? Yes, I am.

Saturday saw Newcastle not only win, but win against Manchester City (complete with an early pantomime preview on the sideline from Pep Guardiola), and win having changed personnel and tweaked the formation.

Today I could write about any of those things, but what I'll probably just focus on is Harvey Barnes.

Barnes is a great example of Newcastle United as a whole because at points he hasn't really got going. He can be frustrating to watch when he doesn't get into games. Additionally, he has had Anthony Gordon to contend with for a first team place.

Gordon's injury meant Barnes starting at the weekend was never in doubt, and the result and performance has meant that Gordon starting is now legitimately in doubt.

When Barnes signed for us I spoke to a Leicester fan who was glad to see the back of him. All he does is provide assists and score goals, they sighed. Well as it turns out those are the things that win football matches so, on balance, I'm OK with them.

Barnes' game isn't perfect, but with support from a more mobile left back he can and will go from strength to strength. He is, undoubtedly, a 'confidence player' who needs minutes and strong performances to continue progressing. If Saturday is anything to go by he'll progress in no time.

Barnes is part of the kickstart 2025-26 needed. It's frustrating it came in nearly December but there's still time to get this season going. I feel excited again. Until next week.
