This week, Luke Greenfield’s new buddy action comedy film Playdate is once again the number one movie on Prime Video, with greater viewership than even the widely acclaimed Wicked. Though critically panned, the movie has been a major hit on streaming ever since it premiered on the streaming service earlier this month. But in case you’re not one of the many people excited by the idea of an odd-couple comedy starring Kevin James and Alan Ritchson, there’s still more you could check out in the service’s catalog. Without further ado, here’s a look at three great movies that we think you should watch on Prime Video this week.

3 ‘After the Hunt’ (2025)
Directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by Nora Garrett, After the Hunt is a psychological thriller starring Julia Roberts, Ayo Edebiri, and Andrew Garfield. The film follows Alma (Roberts), a college professor caught in the middle of a sexual abuse scandal involving one of her students (Edebiri) and a colleague (Garfield) that brings back traumatic memories of her past. The movie also features Michael Stuhlbarg, Chloë Sevigny, Lío Mehiel, and more in supporting roles.
Guadagnino’s latest film, After the Hunt premiered out of competition at the 2025 Venice International Film Festival ahead of a theatrical release in October, receiving rather mixed reviews from critics. While the film has been criticized by some for holding back in its exploration of its provocative premise and themes, it still earned praise for its performances, especially those of Roberts and Garfield. Roberts’ stellar performance in the movie as a troubled and layered character has been widely hailed as one of her best yet, and it earned the actor a nomination for the AARP Movies for Grownups Award for Best Actress.
2 ‘Blockers’ (2018)
Directed by Kay Cannon in her directorial debut, Blockers is a sex comedy that follows a trio of parents trying to stop their daughters from losing their virginity on prom night. John Cena, Leslie Mann, and Ike Barinholtz star as the parents, with Kathryn Newton, Geraldine Viswanathan, and Gideon Adlon as the daughters. The movie also features Graham Phillips, Miles Robbins, Jimmy Bellinger, Colton Dunn, Sarayu Blue, Gary Cole, Gina Gershon, June Diane Raphael, and Hannibal Buress in supporting roles.
A modern sex comedy classic, Blockers premiered at the 2018 South by Southwest festival to positive reviews and had a successful run at the box office, grossing $94 million worldwide against a $21 million budget. It’s a hilarious comedy that wonderfully captures the anxieties of parents confronted by the fact that their children are growing up, and its surprisingly intelligent story helps elevate it beyond the usually low-brow limits of its genre. The film also went on to earn a nomination for a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Film – Wide Release, though it lost to Greg Berlanti’s Love, Simon.
1 ‘Red One’ (2024)
Directed by Jake Kasdan and written by Chris Morgan, Red One is a Christmas movie that puts an action movie spin on Santa Claus and his helpers. The story kicks off when a black ops team kidnaps Santa (J.K. Simmons) on Christmas Eve, forcing his head of security (Dwayne Johnson) to team up with a hacker (Chris Evans) to rescue him. The film also stars Lucy Liu, Kiernan Shipka, Bonnie Hunt, Kristofer Hivju, Nick Kroll, and more in key roles.
Released theatrically in November 2024, Red One was not a hit with critics or at the box office, but its Prime Video premiere still brought high viewership, making it one of the most-streamed movies of the year. Again, it’s not a particularly good movie, but it does work as a light-hearted Christmas comedy with lots of style and star power, even if it lacks any real weight. And in its defense, the movie does seem aware of its own absurdity, leaning fully into the sheer ridiculousness of its story for maximum funny effect.
